What If It’s Us

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera is a sweet, YA (aimed at teenagers) romance.  Arthur Seuss is in New York City for the summer with his parents working for his mother’s law firm.  On a coffee run he sees Ben Alejo and follows him into the post office.  Ben is in the post office attempting to return a box filled with his ex’s possessions.  They meet and exchange just enough information to allow cyberstalking to pinpoint identity at which point a number of first dates are attempted.  Arthur & Ben’s parents and friends add their own threads to the plot creating an enjoyable stew of young love.  This is not an ever after kind of story but it is a realistic, sweet take on youthful love that you don’t have to be a youth to enjoy.

History of Highland Park…

Did you know there is a famous stained glass studio located in Highland Park? Let’s Make Something

Have some fun decorating an empty glass jar… You will need:

• Glass jar. Here you can use any you have around from the large pickle jar to the small jam jar.
• Tissue paper in a variety of colors
• Glue
• Brush

The goal is to apply the tissue paper to the jar so start by thinking about your design. Do you want to create a scene? Do you want to make something completely abstract? Do you want to use regular shapes to make a pattern? Once you’ve decided what you want to do cut your tissue paper into the shapes you need to create that design.  Then mix some glue with water.  I find a ratio of about ½ glue to ½ water works fine.  With a brush coat the glass with the glue mixture. Apply a tissue paper shape and lightly coat over it with the glue mixture. Continue applying all the shapes you need to complete your design.  Allow the whole thing to dry.

Use your decorated jar anyway you wish. Perhaps you can put tea lights in for a decorative, glowing accent. Perhaps you can turn it into a pencil or pen holder. Maybe it can serve as a vase.

Name a noted female mathematician born before the 1800’s?

History of Highland Park

The 1981 article by Charles Cooper, “Fred Thompson earned millions as movie star; died at age 38” (http://dbase1.lapl.org/webpics/calindex/documents/10/520192.pdf) recalls the life of Highland Park raised Fred Thompson. Thompson who not only grew up in Highland Park but went to Occidental College apparently won national and international championships in the decathlon before becoming a Minister and serving in WWI. Marrying a divorced woman forced him from the church so he turned to acting becoming notable as an actor in silent, western films.  The article goes into more detail about this interesting man’s life. Although annoyingly incomplete, what is there is fascinating. Check it out.

Trivia of the Week (Answer)…

Our question focused on a different disease and asked what are some of the signs and symptoms of the measles?  Symptoms include: Cough, Runny nose. Red, watery eyes, High fever, sometimes over 104°F which usually occur a week or 2 after a person has been exposed. The rash appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms.

This answer was found courtesy of the Gale Health and Wellness database.  This database offers full text medical encyclopedias, nearly 400 health and medical journals, more than 800 pamphlets and nearly 2,100 health articles from general interest publications.
