Trivia of the Month (Answer)...

Book Jacket for: The poisons and antidotes sourcebook

This month’s question was if you are misfortunate enough to suffer a poisoning by digitoxin what should you do?  Digitoxin is a cardiac glycoside used to regulate the heart’s rhythm.  To counteract its adverse affects you should wash the stomach with strong tea and keep the victim lying down. Give stimulants such as caffeine, ammonia or atropine.

The question (and answer) was found on p. 147 of The Poisons and Antidotes Sourcebook by Carol Turkington. The book was published by Facts for Life in 1999.

Witchmark

Book Jacket for: WitchmarkIn Witchmark C.L. Polk gives us an imaginative tale of a land reminiscent of Edwardian England but only vaguely.  Our hero is Miles Singer a doctor returned from war who is busy treating the mentally war torn.  Miles has magic which he must keep hidden lest he be sent to an asylum or enslaved for his power.  Using his magic he notices that many of the veterans have a miasma.  A man dies in his arms after asking for his help and Miles is on the road to trying to figure out both mysteries with lots of larger consequences.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those who like fantasy with an element of mystery mixed in.

Winter Reading Challenge

The library will be offering a Winter Reading Challenge this year.  Think of the WRC (or winter reading challenge) as a counterpart to the one we do in the summer, except maybe a bit lower key.  The purpose is to keep everyone reading and engaged across the winter holidays.

The WRC will begin on December 13 and run until January 13.  You can stop by the branch to register and obtain a paper game board or you can register yourself online and use the computer to keep track of your progress. There will be small prizes available for you to win as you work your way through the challenge and completion earns you a ticket in a branch raffle for a $50 Amazon gift card.

Look for the link to the online component of the Winter Reading Challenge on the library’s webpage at www.lapl.org on the 13th.

Make plans to enroll your entire family and see who is first among you to complete the game board!

Then we have a fun Shrinky Dink program set for December 14 at 3:00.  Design your own fun amulets or magnets and then watch the power of heat transform them.  We have plenty of material for this program so bring all your friends.

Trail of Lightning

Book Jacket for: Trail of lightningTrail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse is set in the near future on the land of the Dinétah (the Navajo reservation).  It takes place after cataclysmic global warming has drowned most of the world.  There has been a (literal) rebirth of the gods and heroes of myth in the aftermath of this cataclysm.  Maggie Hoskie, our heroine, is a monster slayer and in this volume she is sent on an adventure that tests origins and skills.

This is an exciting story that highlights the myths & legends of the Navajo people in the context of post-apocalyptic fantasy.  Recommended for those who like a good all-out fight with gods and demons.
