Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen

Book Jacket for: Gentleman Jole and the Red QueenI’ve long been a fan of Lois McMaster Bujold for her generally light-hearted approach to SF.  Her latest, Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen is no exception.  In this book the narrative switches away from Miles to his mother Cordelia and to Oliver Jole a man who has a complicated history with the Vorkosigans.  It has been 3 years since the death of Aral Vorkosigan and his mourners are starting to move on.  Cordelia has decided to take advantage of some frozen reproductive material to engender some daughters and she offers Oliver the chance to use the same material to conceive some sons.  This re-kindles a relationship between the two.  In the meantime we explore the planet of Sergyar and enjoy a visit from Miles & his family.  While not quite as good as A Civil Campaign this book is definitely worth a read.

Recommended.

The Arroyo Book Club’s April Pick….

Book Jacket for: Ghettoside : a true story of murder in America
The book the Arroyo Book Club will be reading for April is Ghettoside by Jill Leovy.  As always this is a book I have not yet read so let me have Amazon.com provide you with the book description:
On a warm spring evening in South Los Angeles, a young man is shot and killed on a sidewalk minutes away from his home, one of the thousands of black Americans murdered that year. His assailant runs down the street, jumps into an SUV, and vanishes, hoping to join the scores of killers in American cities who are never arrested for their crimes.
But as soon as the case is assigned to Detective John Skaggs, the odds shift.
Here is the kaleidoscopic story of the quintessential, but mostly ignored, American murder—a “ghettoside” killing, one young black man slaying another—and a brilliant and driven cadre of detectives whose creed is to pursue justice for forgotten victims at all costs. Ghettoside is a fast-paced narrative of a devastating crime, an intimate portrait of detectives and a community bonded in tragedy, and a surprising new lens into the great subject of why murder happens in our cities—and how the epidemic of killings might yet be stopped.
A nice combination of true crime and social issues, definitely a book that will lay the groundwork for discussion.  For this particular book I’d like us to generate our own discussion questions so read it with a pen and paper handy and note down interesting questions as they occur to you, then bring those questions with you when you come to book discussion on April 22 at 3:00.  As always you can pick up a copy of the book from the library.

Indexing Reflections

Book Jacket for: Indexing : reflectionsSeanan McGuire continues the story she began in Indexing (see previous entry) in Indexing Reflections.  This book picks up where the other left off.  Things have begun to settle down.  Birdie, our villain, is safely locked up in Childe Prison.  The team is cleared by HR and is back in the business of keeping unruly fairy tales from rewriting reality when a twisted Cinderella breaks out of prison.  Now the race is on to find the escapee, figure out what’s really going on, and save the world.

The book was not quite as exciting as the first of the series.  The author spent too much time in the whiteout wood in a way that didn’t really bring excitement or pace to the plot.  Definitely not a book that can be read alone but I would recommend it to those who have read the first of the series and are curious about how things continue.

Medusa’s Web

Book Jacket for: Medusa's webTim Powers displays his talent for combining disparate ideas in compelling and unexpected ways in his new novel Medusa’s Web.  In this book, Scott and Madeline Madden return to their childhood home in the wake of their aunt’s suicide.  Once there they are caught up in a web of “spider” addiction --- the principal feature of this addiction is that the “trip” involves literally switching out your body to another’s in another place and time.  Scott begins to see signs that his aunt, or the part of her that is living in the cracks of the spider web, is trying to take over his sister and must take action to try to shut the whole thing down.

I generally like Powers work and this book is no exception.  I would recommend it to people who like speculative fiction and enjoy books that get you thinking about larger existential questions.
