History of Highland Park…

Apparently it was halted to make way for freeway construction. It is actually quite interesting. Take a look.

Arroyo Book Club's August Pick

 


August is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club and this time around we’ll be reading The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund De Waal.  To quote from the book's description:

This fascinating book traces the parallel stories of nineteenth-century art patron Charles Ephrussi and his unique collection of 360 miniature netsuke Japanese ivory carvings, documenting Ephrussi's relationship with Marcel Proust and the impact of the Holocaust on his cosmopolitan family.

I’ll be ordering copies and putting them on the shelf under the window by the Circulation Desk (where I have always put them).  You may also order a copy for yourself directly by following this link

We will be meeting to discuss the book on August 27 at 3:00.  We will again be enjoying a hybrid meeting so you may choose to attend either in person or virtually.  If you’d like to attend via Zoom email ayosco@lapl.org so I can add you to the link list.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….


This time we wanted you to explore the library’s online movie poster collection and so asked what is the earliest movie poster in that collection.  The earliest poster is for the 1913 silent, short Wamba a Child of the Jungle. 

From the special collections of the Frances Howard Goldwyn Hollywood Regional Branch Library, the Movie Poster Collection spans from the earliest years of the motion picture industry to the World War II era. Part of the Library's "Visual Collections", these selected posters have been digitized and may be viewed online. Roots & Rhythm with Louie Cruz Beltran

 



When: July 30 at 3:00 p.m.

Where: Arroyo Seco Branch Library | 6145 N. Figueroa Street

What: Louie Cruz Beltran is a master conguero, an entertainer at heart, he blends fiery Afro Cuban rhythms with Latin jazz, jazz, pop, and R&B influences. He will join us to demonstrate and discuss various rhythms, where they specifically originated, and how they made their way into the music we enjoy. His knowledge, humor, and musicianship are sure to yield a fun, informative and interactive experience everyone will enjoy... so, mark your calendar and come on by!

History of Highland Park


If you’ve ever wondered about that mural on the outside of the utility building on Ave 56 and Meridian wonder no more.  Check out the 1976 article “Remodel Telephone Building” for details about what the building actually does as well as who planned and painted the mural and what historical aspects of Highland Park are reflected in the mural. Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?

 

In Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?, funeral director Caitlin Doughty spells out the death related questions she’s received from children over the years.  She provides serious, yet light hearted answers to questions that range from the titular will my cat eat my eyeballs through why don’t animals dig up all the graves to can you describe the smell of a dead body and beyond.

This book manages to be informative about a subject that makes many squeamish in a manner that allows the squeamish to continue the read.  Recommended for anyone who’s wondered about what happens to the body after death.

History of Highland Park


 The article “Occidental College” provides a one page history of the institution and its moves. Written circa 1940 the article focuses on the college’s growth over time and its resulting moves from Boyle Heights to Highland Park near Figueroa to its current location north of York.  Check it out.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

 

This time around the question asked for another quote from the famous Patrick Henry “give me liberty or give me death” speech.  Possibilities include:

Arroyo Seco Library Summer Reading Challenge Programs - JULY

(for Adults – though everyone is welcome)

We will be having a number of interesting programs as part of the summer reading challenge in July.  This year’s theme is express yourself & hopefully the programming will help meet that challenge. Feel free to join us for any or all of them.  Specific program details:

Highland Park Mural Walk / Saturday, July 9 at 9:30am & Thursday, July 14 at 6pm
Take a walk with us and both get exercise and explore art throughout Highland Park. We’ll meet in the library foyer.

Bead Making / Saturday, July 16 at 3pm
Showcase your creativity by designing and making beads from recycled paper. In person, library meeting room.

Mosaic Mural / Throughout July at tables in children’s area culminating on Thursday, July 21 at 3pm
Express yourself! Fill a sheet with a drawing that show cases you, your dreams, & your love of our city and see that sheet become part of a larger community art piece. In person, library children’s room & meeting room.

Roots & Rhythm with Louie Cruz Beltran / Saturday, July 30 at 3pm
Find your own beat! Come enjoy a humor & rhythm filled presentation about percussion music. In person, library meeting room.
