Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time the question is what is a word that was borrowed into the English language from Dharuk? There is more than one answer to this question.  In fact, according to the source I used to find the answer, there are 19 answers.  Among them: bettong, narang, and wombat.

Find the answer to the question with an advanced search in the Oxford English Dictionary.  The online edition of that venerable work is available on the library’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card. You’ll find it under O.

Arroyo Book Club October Pick…

October is a non-fiction book month for the Arroyo Book Club so the non-fiction book we will be reading is Barbizon by Paulina Bren.  The Barbizon was a New York City residential hotel for women. Bren tells the history of the hotel and the women, both famous and not, who stayed there.  The book “offers readers a multilayered history of New York City in the 20th century, and of the generations of American women torn between their desire for independence and their looming social expiration date. By providing women a room of their own, the Barbizon was the hotel that set them free.”

As always, you will find copies of the book on the top of the bookcase by the circulation desk.  You may also elect to check out the ebook version. Find the link to the ebook page here: https://lapl.overdrive.com/library/available/media/5588716.

We will be using group generated questions to discuss this book so keep a pen and paper handy as you read to note down interesting questions or points of discussion, then be ready to take your turn leading discussion when we meet up on October 22 at 3:00.

Our October 22 meeting will be a hybrid meeting so you may elect to attend either in person or via Zoom. If you wish to attend via Zoom please email ayosco@lapl.org so we can get you added to the link list.

Stuff Matters

In Stuff Matters, Mark Miodownik explores the materials that make up our world.  This exploration takes a material by material approach and covers things ranging from chocolate to porcelain to plastic and beyond.  This interesting book is aimed at the general reader, no advanced understanding of chemistry or physics required.  I would recommend it for anyone with a bit of curiosity about the details of the stuff that surrounds us.

LA Bio Blitz Challenge

This September Los Angeles has issued a bio blitz challenge.  What does that mean exactly? It means that you are challenged to photograph and map the animals, insects, and plants found in your neighborhood, in your local parks, and generally wherever you roam.

Los Angeles is located in a global biodiversity hot spot and has an incredible array of native animals, plants and ecosystems to explore. By uploading observations to iNaturalist you will help to better protect and understand where different species of plants and animals live across the City. Every time you do, especially in observation cold spots in the map, you contribute to the knowledge about the City’s biodiversity that supports protecting and conserving local wildlife and their habitats.

You will want to get started by downloading the iNaturalist app from Google Play or the App Store. Then get outside! Observe the wildlife around you. Explore observation cold spots near you and log observations in these areas to help researchers understand which species live there.  Finally, upload your observations to the LA BioBlitz Challenge 2022 project

Find a FAQ with answers to all your questions here

The LA BioBlitz Challenge is an exciting collaboration between the Los Angeles Public Library’s Neighborhood Science Initiative and LA Sanitation and Environment’s Biodiversity Program.
