Trivia of the Month (Answer)....

The month’s question was what are the rights you get when you copyright something?  You get the following set of rights:

  • The right of reproduction
  • The right of derivatives
  • The right of distribution
  • The right of performance
  • The right of display

The question, and answer, were taken from p. 4-5 of The Copyright Zone by Edward C. Greenberg and Jack Reznicki.  The book was published in 2010 by Focal Press.

July Arroyo Seco Book Club Book

Book Jacket for: Beach musicThe Arroyo Seco Book Club will be reading Beach Music by Pat Conroy in July.  The book’s jacket copy says:
"Beach Music is about Jack McCall, an American living in Rome with his young daughter, trying to find peace after the recent trauma of his wife's suicide. But his solitude is disturbed by the appearance of his sister-in-law, who begs him to return home, and of two school friends asking for his help in tracking down another classmate who went underground as a Vietnam protester and never resurfaced. These requests launch Jack on a journey that encompasses the past and the present in both Europe and the American South, and that leads him to shocking - and ultimately liberating - truths."
Publisher’s Weekly said:
“…Conroy has not lost his touch. His storytelling powers have not failed; neither has his poetic skill with words, nor his vivid imagination. His long-awaited sixth book sings with the familiar elegiac Southern cadences, his prose is sweepingly lyrical (if sometimes melodramatic), unabashedly sentimental (if sometimes indigestibly schmaltzy).”
Sounds interesting.  Stop by the library for a copy and join us on July 23rd at 3:00 for a stimulating discussion about it.

Saturn Run

Book Jacket for: Saturn runSaturn Run by John Sandford and Ctein has humanity witness an obviously alien space ship enter the solar system, make a stop at an object orbiting Saturn, and leave.  The question is what were they doing and the race is on to take a space ship out to see.  The contenders boil down to the United States and China and the book focuses on the journey, what was discovered, and the return with plenty of time spent on the political maneuverings between the two countries involved in the race.

The authors elected to go the realistic SF route here, there’s no unexplained advanced technology helping anyone out.  All in all a nicely told tale that left me personally feeling (not too spoilerish I hope) that the Americans were the overall villains of the piece.  Recommended for those who like a nice gripping adventure set in space.

Make Me

Book Jacket for: Make me : a Jack Reacher novelFans of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series will enjoy Make Me.  Here Reacher gets off a train in Mother’s Rest primarily because he’s curious about the name.  He immediately meets Michelle Chang who is waiting for a detective co-worker of hers to return.  Reacher gets drawn into the mystery Chang and her partner are involved in which turns out to involve a Los Angeles Time newsman and a deep Internet conspiracy.

While I won’t give the ending away I will say that it is truly disturbing and left me with “just think of something else” problems when I tried to sleep last night.  Recommended for fans of action packed thrillers.

Stay

Book Jacket for: StayIf you’re in the mood for a hunt down the villainous bad guys thriller then you’ll enjoy Stay by Victor Gischler.  David Sparrow is currently a stay at home dad, working to keep the house together and the kids alive while his wife works as an Assistant District Attorney.  David is actually a solo, behind enemy lines, “problem solver” for the military and this comes in handy when a particularly vicious criminal sets his sights on Amy (the wife).

All in all this is a nice shot ‘em up thriller of the type that could easily be turned into a big action movie.  The plot was fairly predictable and our hero maybe benefited a bit more from coincidence then is strictly realistic but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a straight forward action adventure.

T-Minus Two

Book Jacket for: T-minus twoT-Minus Two by KG MacGregor follows the weeding down process of a group of wannabe astronauts aiming to be among the first sent to Mars.  The premise is that a wealthy business man with a love for the idea of colonizing Mars has launched a project to do just that.  Initial applications have been weeded down and we meet our principal two characters as they report for the first of the final elimination steps.  Mila Todorov, a young engineer, and Jancey Beaumont, a former NASA astronaut, team up to try for the first trip to Mars.  We are treated to the tests they undergo and their reactions as well as the shenanigans you might expect from a group of highly competitive people.

The book was a hair too predictable with the reader able to figure out things that were going on before the characters could. Recommended for those who enjoy a space-program story with a side order of women in love (with each other).
