History of Highland Park

Today I bring you the souvenir paper produced by Highland Park News Herald & Journal for Highland Park’s Diamond Jubilee in 1963.  The paper calls itself a “Pictorial and Feature Panorama of the Historical Development of Highland Park… including sketches of the individuals and firms whose faith and plans have made its forward progress possible.”

All in all this is an 88-page extravaganza of information about the Highland Park of the past.  It includes such interesting things as a chart of rainfall by month for the entire 75 years prior to 1963, pictures of all 3 (to that time) Monte Vista Street schools, the first Highland Park subdivision map, lots of celebratory advertising from local businesses and organizations, and more.  Definitely worth browsing through.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time we ask what is Adinkra? Adinkra are visual forms that first achieved prominence among the Akan linguistic group whose members are now part of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Adinkra often involve designs that integrate striking aesthetic power, evocative mathematical structures, and philosophical conceptions ranging from the ethical to the cosmological, expressed in relation to proverbs and stories. The picture included with this post is an example.

Read more about Adinkra in the source article:

Adepoju, O. (2010). Adinkra. In The Oxford Encyclopedia of African Thought. : Oxford University Press. Retrieved 3 Aug. 2022, from https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780195334739.001.0001/acref-9780195334739-e-006.

The question, and answer, were found in “The Oxford Encyclopedia of African Thought” which can be found within Oxford Reference Online.  This database provides quick reference and scholarly articles from a broad range of subjects in over 100 titles that include key titles from the Oxford Companion series and the complete Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.  Find it on the library’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card. You’ll find it under O.

January’s Arroyo Book Club Pick

The January Arroyo Book Club pick is The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. The book provides the following description:

“The nameless narrator of the novel describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood", and retreating amid violence and confusion to the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be. The book is a passionate and witty tour de force of style, strongly influenced by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Joyce, and Dostoevsky.”

We will have copies available for checkout on the shelf by the window where they are normally placed (if you can't find them just ask).  Unfortunately all the e-copies are currently checked out and there’s a wait list, so you’ll have to go with the paper book for this meeting.

This mid-century classic is quite long but fortunately we have extra time.  Our January meeting will be on the 28th at 3:00. It will be a hybrid meeting so you may attend in person or via Zoom. If you elect to join us virtually be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

History of Highland Park

This is an article we have shared fairly recently but we thought we’d share it again in honor of the Los Angeles Public Library’s recent 150th birthday.  It really isn’t an article but rather a booklet, it’s called “Los Angeles Public Library Branches” and provides of thorough look at the branches the library had in 1928. It is full of fascinating history and includes pictures of many of the branches. Check it out.

History of Highland Park

With the Los Angeles Public Library turning 150 on 12/7 we thought we’d revisit some articles touching upon the early library branches in our Highland Park area. We’ll start with this letter to the editor arguing in favor of purchasing the land upon which our branch would eventually sit.
