Arroyo Book Club March Pick….

The Arroyo Book Club will be reading A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles for our March meeting.  This novel tells the tale of Count Alexander Rostov.  The book’s summary tell us:

“When, in 1922, Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.”

Stop by the branch to pick up a paper copy to read.  If you prefer ebooks you’ll find it in Overdrive/Libby

We will meet to discuss the book on March 26 at 3:00 via Zoom.  Email ayosco@lapl.org if you’d like to receive the meeting link.

History of Highland Park

In the article “Old band concert days recalled by Anna Hiner” we learn of the “most impressive band concerts in the city” which took place in Highland Park’s Sycamore Grove from Anna Hiner. The article goes on to detail the Hiners’ releationship with John Phillip Sousa who always stayed with them when he was in Highland Park.  Read the article for an interesting look at musical Highland Park.

This is How You Lose the Time War

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone is a lyrical little epistolary novel that virtually defies description.  Two women, Red and Blue, are on opposite sides of a battle to shape the strands of time in one direction or another.  At the end of one momentous battle one leaves a letter for the other. As they continue to wage their fight up and down the different strands of time they continue their correspondence, developing a relationship that grows more and more meaningful to each of them.

The book is slim and does the neat trick of hinting at the framework of events and leaving the reader to flesh in the, sometimes gruesome, details.  The writing is sparse, almost poetical.  I would recommend this book even to someone who doesn’t normally read science fiction.
