Trivia of the Month (Answer)...

This month’s question was who was the architect of LAPL’s Central Library?  Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed the flagship library for Los Angeles.  Upon Goodhue’s death in 1924, Carleton M. Winslow took up the task of making sure Goodhue’s vision would be fulfilled.

This month’s question (& answer) were taken from pages 32 & 43 of Los Angeles Central Library: A History of its Art and Architecture by Schwartzman & Gee.  The book was published in 2016 by Angel City Press.

Book Burners

In Book Burners a team of people, housed at the Vatican, seek out books housing demons and return them to their archive for safe keeping.  Sal Brooks is a new member of the team, joining after her brother falls victim to one of these books.  Things run out of control as various demon plots seek to undermine the Earth as a whole and one branch of the Vatican’s demon controlling forces begins an odd set of machinations.  The book is written as “episodes” by four different people: Max Gladstone, Margaret Dunlap, Mur Lafferty, and Brian Francis Slattery.

The book was enjoyable enough to finish but I did not love it.  The characters did not draw me in and their various motivations, particularly those of the main character, were not compelling.  I would recommend it to those who really enjoy a good demon infested reality adventure but would not recommend it to anyone else.

LA Made Presents USC’s Kazan Taiko

Unfortunately this event has been CANCELLED.  We will try to reschedule it for the fall, keep your eyes peeled for the new date.

The library’s LA Made is a cultural programming series featuring free music, dance, theater, and conversations with local entertainers at libraries throughout the city.  In May they will be bringing a performance by USC’s Kazan Taiko to our branch.  USC’s Kazan Taiko will showcase the Japanese art of traditional Taiko drumming by performing on magnificent drums and auxiliary instruments.  The program will include audience participation so you will get the chance to play the drum yourself.

The program will take place on Saturday, May 19 at 3:00.

Check out the library’s online event calendar for more LA Made programs at branches throughout the city.  Find the event calendar here: http://www.lapl.org/whats-on/calendar.  Selecting LA Made from the Categories drop down box will limit your results to these programs.

History of Highland Park...

This article, Saloon played role in saga of local park by Fred Allen,  makes the case that saloons in Highland Park are the reason that it was eventually annexed into Los Angeles.  The article goes on to talk in some detail about Sycamore Grove Park.  Check it out.

Hanging Tree

Book Jacket for: The hanging treeBen Aaronovitch continues his Rivers of London series (one of my favorite series) with The Hanging Tree.   In this volume Peter Grant is called into a case involving Lady Tyburn’s daughter and a mysterious drug overdose.  Soon he is navigating the world of the uber-rich, fending off involvement of an American association of magic users, and dealing with a reappearance of the Faceless Man and Lesley.  The book measures up to the previous entries of the series and I would definitely recommend it.

If you’ve not read the series let me direct your attention to it.  Start with Midnight Riot and continue on until your reach our current entry.

Norse Mythology

Neil Gaiman produces a primer on Norse Mythology in his book called (very plainly) Norse Mythology The book consists of retellings of a number of different myths involving Thor, Odin, Loki, and their compatriots.

I was torn by this book.  It is interesting and it was fun to read about gods & goddesses from a non-Greek, non-Roman pantheon.  On the other hand, given the author, I was expecting more than a straightforward, middle-school reading level, narrative of each myth.  I know Gaiman is capable of doing a good job with words but just didn’t see it here.  It came across as an assignment he had lost interest in.  So recommended if all you need is a basic review of stories coming out of Norse mythology, not recommended if you’re looking for a poetic breadth of storytelling.
