June Arroyo Book Club Book

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is “My LA.” In line with that the book club decided it would be fun to read a book that centered Los Angeles in some way for our June & July meetings. The book Dear Los Angeles edited by David Kipen was the run-away winner of our selection poll so it will be our June book.

Dear Los Angeles is an anthology of writing about Los Angeles as found in the diaries & letters of many people from Marilyn Monroe, Cesar Chavez, Susan Sontag, to Albert Einstein, and beyond.

Find the catalog description here

We will be using group generated questions for this discussion so read with paper and pen in hand and note down points for discussion, excerpts you found particularly meaningful, themes you notice, basically anything that will help you formulate 1 or 2 questions to raise with the group for discussion. Bring those questions to our meeting and be prepared to be called upon to ask.

We will have copies of the book available at the branch in the place where such books are usually put, just ask a staff member if you can't find them.

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, June 24 at 3:00. If you're interested in attending via Zoom be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

Carry On

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell tells the tale of Simon Snow, his maybe a vampire roommate Baz, his best friend Penny, and his (ex) girlfriend Agatha.  The four attend a magic school, think Hogwarts, and Simon is hailed be all as the chosen, responsible for saving magic and magicians.

Although it sounds like a total Harry Potter rip-off the story rises above its tropes and tells an interesting tale about things not being what you think they are and the need to verify the whole story yourself. Recommended for fans of Harry Potter style stories of any age.

Area History….

Los Angeles…1781-1981” is a document produced by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.  It is a nice summary of the history of water (and power) usage across 200 years in Los Angeles. A really specific look at the history of Los Angeles. Check it out.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month our question was who was Cornelius Charlton. Cornelius Charlton was one of two African American to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for service during the Korean War. “Charlton also earned the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal and many other citations during his military career. But it took many years for him to get a proper burial.” Learn the whole story in this article from our Gale in Context: Biography database. [article citation: "'BUFFALO SOLDIER' EARNED HIS MEDAL OF HONOR IN KOREA." States News Service, 17 Apr. 2017. Gale In Context: Biography]

The picture of Charlton was found in the February 28, 1952 edition of Jet Magazine. Find all editions of Jet magazine in our Jet Magazine archive. It and Gale in Context: Biography can be accessed via our Research & Homework page. You’ll find the Jet Archive listed under “J” and the Biography database under “G” for Gale. Both can be accessed from home with your library card.

Who Says You’re Dead

Who Says You’re Dead by Jacob M. Appel is a book on medical & ethical dilemmas written for the lay person.  In the book Appel lays out a scenario without comment, allowing you space to think about it and form your own initial conclusions.  He then provides the medical ethicist’s take on the scenario.  The whole thing is highly engaging and easily understood even when there are no concrete ethical solutions to the proposed problem.  The book is broken into sections; including sections on body parts, making babies, the good of the many (your pandemic related scenarios), and end-of-life issues.

I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys thinking about the moral rights and wrongs that can be encountered at the doctor or in the hospital.
