Good news! Central Library’s Do It Yourself Memory Lab is back in operation. What’s a do it yourself memory lab I hear you ask. It’s a service that allows you to do your own personal archiving and digitizing: converting VHS tapes and Super 8 to digital, scanning photos and negatives, and much more.
- Things to know before making a reservation to use the Memory Lab:
- The Memory Lab is located inside the Octavia Lab (https://www.lapl.org/labs) the Central Library's makerspace on LL2 across from the Science, Technology and Patents Department.
- Reservations are only taken by phone, 213-228-7150 or in-person.
In order to make a reservation, an orientation is required. If you took the in-person Memory Lab orientation pre-pandemic, you’re good to go. If you’re new to DIYML you will need to complete the new virtual orientation accessible on Niche Academy (https://my.nicheacademy.com/labs), and receive a passing score on the quiz (71% or above). Create a free email login and password on Niche Academy before beginning the orientation to receive full credit.
Note that the Octavia Lab hours are:
- Monday, Tuesday, Friday & Saturday: 1 - 5 p.m.
- Wednesday & Thursday: 3:30 - 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday and city holidays: Closed
