History of Highland Park…

This article from an unknown periodical speaks of a ship that was christened in honor of Charles Lummis.  The article then goes on to provide a brief thumbnail bio of Lummis and information about his house.  A lovely sketch of his house is included.  Take a look.

Arroyo Book Club January Pick

The Arroyo Book Club will be reading a non-fiction title for our January discussion. The non-fiction title we will be reading is Dreamland by Sam Quinones. The book is described in part:

From a small town in Mexico to the boardrooms of Big Pharma to main streets nationwide, an explosive and shocking account of addiction in the heartland of America… In 1929, in the blue-collar city of Portsmouth, Ohio, a company built a swimming pool the size of a football field; named Dreamland, it became the vital center of the community. Now, addiction has devastated Portsmouth, as it has hundreds of small rural towns and suburbs across America—addiction like no other the country has ever faced. How that happened is the riveting story of Dreamland.

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is).  If you prefer an e-book look here

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, January 27 at 3 p.m. If you can’t join us in person but would like to follow along remotely please send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

The Body

The Body by Bill Bryson is a comprehensive tour of the human body written by a man who has written some excellent travel books. The book is fascinating and definitely designed for the non-expert. My one quibble would be that Bryson’s writing style is somewhat choppy and he will abruptly jump topics between paragraphs.  I’d say the interesting facts presented outweigh their somewhat awkward presentation and I would recommend this book to any amateur interested in learning more about how we work.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

The month’s trivia question asked what is vitiligo. Vitiligo is a skin condition where you see white patches from loss of skin pigment. One to two of every 100 people are affected. Vitiligo is the result of the disappearance of the skin's melanocytes and no one really knows why this happens. Current theories include:

1. Abnormally functioning nerve cells may make toxic substances that injure melanocytes.

2. The body's immune system may destroy melanocytes. Researchers think pigment may be destroyed as the body responds to a substance it perceives as foreign.

3. Pigment-producing cells may self-destruct. While pigment is forming, toxic byproducts could be produced and destroy melanocytes.

4. There is a genetic defect that makes the melanocytes susceptible to injury.

The question, and answer, were found in the Gale Health & Wellness database. This database provides full text medical encyclopedias, nearly 400 health and medical journals, more than 800 pamphlets and nearly 2,100 health articles from general interest publications. The particular article referenced was:

Colby, Helen, PhD. "Vitiligo." The Gale Encyclopedia of Dermatology, edited by Lisa Kumar, vol. 2, Gale, 2017, pp. 771-774. Gale Health and Wellness.

Find the Gale Health & Wellness database on the library’s Research & Homework page under “G” and access it with your library card.

Like Crazy

Like Crazy is a memoir by Dan Mathews.  Mathews took in his mother once she was no longer able to live independently and looked after her until her death. Both Mathews and his mother are characters and their exuberance fills a book that might seem somewhat depressing.  Mathews recounts his mother’s struggles with old age and their discovery that she had been suffering from schizophrenia her whole life while sharing stories of his work for PETA, his friends, and the family he manages to create with his friends and his mother.

Arroyo Book Club December Pick

The Arroyo Book Club has made a habit of reading a Shakespeare play each December for a number of years now. With this in mind, December's book is Macbeth by William Shakespeare

“As it begins so will it end. Behind every successful man is an ambitious woman, and behind the Scottish Thane of Cawdor is his wife, Lady Macbeth. Together they will plot the death of a king, and all else who stand in their path towards absolute power.

But guilt-stoked madness and paranormal visitation lie ahead, and the man who kills in the night will come to understand that what begins in blood will end in blood.”

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is).

If you’d like to view the play there are a number of options.
  • Kit Monkman’s Macbeth (2020). Available on Hoopla here
  • Jeremy Freeston’s Macbeth (1997). Available on Hoopla here
  • Rupert Goold’s Macbeth (2003). Available on Kanopy here
  • BBC’s Shakespeare Series Macbeth (1983). Available on Kanopy here

We will meet to discuss the book on December 23 at 3:00. If you can’t join us in person but would like to follow along remotely please send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month’s question asked what the portion of Figueroa that comes north out of the York / Figueroa intersection used to be called. It was Latrobe Street according to a 1905 insurance map of Los Angeles (small clip of relevant map included). You’ll note you can see the plot of land where the library will eventually be built (10 years on) in this clip.

The map was found in FIMo (Fire Insurance Maps from Historical Information Gatherers).  FIMo Historical Information Gatherers own the world's largest online digital collection of color fire insurance maps, real estate atlases and similar land use maps for North America.  FIMo includes map research tools and search tips to assist users in finding maps for a specific location. Find FIMo on the library’s Research & Homework page under “F” and access it with your library card.

The House in the Cerulean Sea

Meet Linus Baker. He works for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth as a caseworker. He knows the rules and regulations, knows that they are drawn up with the best interest of the children, and is dedicated to doing his best for the children.  He is sent to investigate an orphanage on a distant island by Extremely Upper Management. There he meets 6 very special children and the adults who care for them. Will Linus learn that the best help lies past the rules and regulations?  Find out in The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune.

The book is peopled by truly interesting characters and set in some sort of weird quasi big brother state, perfect for those who enjoy fantasy, dystopia light, and struggles for the triumph of our better selves.

Monthly Trivia Question…

This month’s question asks about previous street names. So, Figueroa St. used to be called Pasadena Ave. Pasadena Ave., as it was then configured followed up to the York intersection and continued to the right.

Saying it another way, nowadays we have Figueroa intersecting with York. Previously we had Pasadena come up and bear to the right with York stopping at that intersection and merging into Pasadena Ave. So, long question short, what was the name of the street that continued straight out of that intersection?

November Arroyo Book Club Pick….

November is a fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club and the book we will be reading is Warlight by Michael Ondaatje.

From the internationally acclaimed, Booker Prize-winning author of The English Patient, this is “an elegiac thriller [with] the immediate allure of a dark fairy tale*” set in the decade after World War II that tells the dramatic story of two teenagers and an eccentric group of characters. *The Washington Post

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is). If you prefer ebook format there are plenty of copies available in Libby/Overdrive here

We will meet to discuss the book on November 25 at 3:00. If you can’t join us in person but would like to follow along remotely please send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

The Only Plane in the Sky

The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff is a narrative of the events of 9/11 as told by all.  Garrett takes us minute by minute through the events of the day using the individual recollections of many different people.  Think of the work as a patchwork quilt. The quilt as a whole talks about the calamity of the day, while each patch represents a slice of one person’s experience of one moment in the day.  It provides an interesting perspective on a day that everyone who was old enough at the time can remember for themselves.  Of course it is mind-numbingly sad but it provides a nice look at an historical event. I would recommend it.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month’s question was when was the first gender reassignment surgery in the United States performed? It took place in February of 1965.  It took place at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine an organization which then went on to establish the first medical clinic to address gender identity and the medical concerns of transsexuals and those seeking gender reassignment.

The question and answer were found in a book on the Salem Press & Grey House Publishing Reference Shelf. The book was Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Events. Find the Salem Press Reference Shelf on the library’s Research & Homework page under “S” and access it with your library card.

Bears Behaving Badly

Bears Behaving Badly by MaryJanice Davidson is a romance novel set amid a society of were creatures.  Davidson’s world is basically our world with all the were creatures living hidden amongst us.  Our main characters are Annette Garsea and David Auberon, both a variety of werebear.  Annette works for what is effectively child protective services and David is a private investigator.  David is involved in an incident involving a juvenile werewolf and werefox which brings the whole thing under Annette’s purview.  Investigation reveals a deeper crime involving juveniles of many types and Annette and David undertake to get to the bottom of things.

The book is quite a fun read though it is not for someone who enjoys complicated plots.  The reader can easily figure out what’s going on chapters ahead of the investigating main characters.  However the characters are fun and the romance is not too steamy, it only gets physical at the very end.  I would recommend this to people who like a good fantasy story.

October Arroyo Book Club Pick….

October is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club and the book we will be reading is The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. This book is a thought experiment that begins with the premise that all humanity has disappeared. To quote from a review in Library Journal:

The book's strength lies in its audacious willingness to confront uncomfortable questions while offering glimpses of answers in areas of recent wars, diseases, and ecological disasters. This is neither a warning to human beings to change their errant ways, nor a wishful paean to returning to the Garden of Eden; instead it is a sober, analytical elucidation of the effects of human dominance on this planet, intriguing if not especially comforting.

Highland Park History…

This article published in the Highland Park Journal on 3/3/1984 takes a good, solid look at the Judson Stained Glass studios.  The studios were founded in 1895 on Ave. 66 (and can still be found there today).  Read the article for a fascinating look at the Studios’ history and check out their website (http://judsonstudios.com/) for some lovely images of their work.

Daisy Cooper’s Rules for Living

Daisy Cooper’s Rules for Living by Tamsin Keily is another take on the “now that I’m dead let me learn what life really is” trope.  These books can sometimes be quite imaginative as the author builds a speculative post-life universe but this particular take is weighed down by a main character that is radically self-centered.  It’s particularly odd because the author goes to great lengths to say that Daisy is selfless while consistently showing us the opposite in plot and character interaction.

The book is easy to read and does keep the reader entertained. Pick it up if you’ve an hour to kill and like exploring the “life after…” genre.

Area History (nearby community school edition)

The article "Eagle Rock recalls days of little country school" by Nelda Thompson from the Feb. 12, 1967 edition of the Highland Park News Herald provides a great deal of detail about the early years of schooling in Eagle Rock starting from the very first days in 1884. Included in the article are pictures of various classes over the years. I include the one from 1884.

Arroyo Book Club’s September Pick

The Arroyo Book Club’s selection for our September read is Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. The New York Times Book review says this novel is a "wildly inventive, a humane and uplifting book for adults that's infused with the magic of childhood reading experiences." The book’s summary begins:

Set in Constantinople in the fifteenth century, in a small town in present-day Idaho, and on an interstellar ship decades from now, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book.

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is). There are plenty of copies available in Libby if you would rather read the ebook version. Find it here.

We will meet to discuss the book on September 23 at 3:00. If you can’t join us in person but would like to follow along remotely please send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.
