In Middle Game by Seanan McGuire we meet Roger and Dodger. The product of an alchemist’s experiment they are the embodiment of human knowledge and the key to unlocking the Impossible City and gaining god like powers. We follow Roger and Dodger from their childhoods as they entangled, gradually begin to realize things are not as they seem, and eventually begin playing with time as they strive to find a path to a future that is acceptable to them.
The book has an interesting plot line that can be quite grim. While I didn’t love it I also didn’t stop reading it which is, if nothing else, a measure of acceptability. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy fantasy that takes a 90 degree turn from recognizable reality without leaving recognizable reality.
