Food writer and restaurant critic Ruth Reichl tackles her years as editor and chief of Gourmet in Save Me the Plums. Reichl has always had an engaging and down to earth way of talking about food and making the mundane events of her life interesting, a talent she makes full use of in this book. The book begins when she takes on the job, follows her as the magazine turns around, meets the challenge of being in New York on 9/11, and faces new challenges brought on by the recession before finally ending with the publishers decision to close down the magazine. Along the way Reichl introduces us to the cast of characters who worked for and with Gourmet. Recipes are included.
All in all an interesting look at a different, food driven, way of life. I would recommend it.
