History of Highland Park

The 5/30/74 article, "City in touch with benefactors: Flagpole memorial," provides a recount of the installation of the large Veterans’ Memorial Flag post on the corner of York and Figueroa. Included I was pleased to learn, was the information that the large pine tree living where the pole is now was transplanted to Garvanza Park.

Save Me the Plums

Food writer and restaurant critic Ruth Reichl tackles her years as editor and chief of Gourmet in Save Me the Plums.  Reichl has always had an engaging and down to earth way of talking about food and making the mundane events of her life interesting, a talent she makes full use of in this book.  The book begins when she takes on the job, follows her as the magazine turns around, meets the challenge of being in New York on 9/11, and faces new challenges brought on by the recession before finally ending with the publishers decision to close down the magazine.  Along the way Reichl introduces us to the cast of characters who worked for and with Gourmet.  Recipes are included.

All in all an interesting look at a different, food driven, way of life.  I would recommend it.

History of Highland Park

The article “Highland Park boy publishes new book an America’s craftsmen” was written in 1949, quite obviously, on the occasion of the publication of a book by Scott Graham Williamson. The article provides a quick look at Williamson’s life and makes a very noteworthy shout out to the Arroyo Seco Library.

The Joy of X

Steven Strogatz takes his readers on a tour of mathematics from counting, through algebra, into calculus and out to infinity, with a discussion of Hilbert’s hotel analogy for conceptualizing Cantor’s comparison of infinite sets, in The Joy of X.  Each topic is presented in a short, conversational chapter and all topics are presented at an idea level so that people can understand even if they lack a background in mathematics.  The author is a tad digressive and makes odd leaps in his narrative thread but the book on the whole is interesting and I would definitely recommend it.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time we asked what the world’s most populous city is.  And, relatedly, where do US cities appear on that list?  The (admittedly small) chart above shows Chongqing, China as the most populous city with a population of 30,484,300. Looking down the list you’ll find New York City, the first US city to appear, at number 30 with 8,622,698 people.  Los Angeles is number 39.

The question (and answer) were found using World Geography (Salem Press).  This ebook is arranged into six volumes by world region. Each region covers the following interconnected categories to present a global view of how geography affects our world: Geographical Concepts and Worldview, Human Geography, including Political Geography, Regional Breakdown, Physical Geography, Economic Geography, Biogeography, and Natural Resources, and a Gazetteer. Find the ebook listed alphabetically under W on LAPL’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card.  Once on the page for the ebook scroll down to the very bottom of the page to find World Geography.
