For our September pick we are constructing our own personalized anthology of essays. The essays we will read for discussion are:
- On the Duty of Civil Disobedience by Thoreau (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71). “It argues the superiority of the individual conscience over acquiescence to government.”
- Self-Reliance by Emerson (find it in this collection: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16643). “Persuasive and convincing, Emerson challenges readers to redefine their beliefs and sense of self.”
- Common Sense by Paine (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/147). “Paine's daring prose paved the way for the Declaration of Independence…”
These are all titles that can be found on Project Gutenberg. You can also get in touch with me at ayosco@lapl.org for physical copies of books containing the essays, while supplies last.
The plan is for everyone to obtain copies and spend the first couple of weeks of September reading. I will begin posting questions to discuss on the group’s web bulletin board space on September 16 and will add a new question each day until September 26 (our regular meeting day). I encourage members to log on each day to answer the day’s question as well as review, and respond to, the answers other members provided for the previous day’s questions. We will then meet via video-conference on September 26 at 3:00.
