Trivia of the Week (Answer)…

This week we asked you to identify the first line of the poem that includes a raven and the phrase “nevermore”.  The poem is, of course, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven and the first line is:

ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—

This was easy to find by using the LitFinder database.  This database provides access to thousands of full-text poems, stories, essays, plays and speeches.  Find it listed alphabetically under L on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) and access it with your library card.

Arroyo Book Club September Pick…

For our September pick we are constructing our own personalized anthology of essays.  The essays we will read for discussion are:
These are all titles that can be found on Project Gutenberg. You can also get in touch with me at ayosco@lapl.org for physical copies of books containing the essays, while supplies last.

The plan is for everyone to obtain copies and spend the first couple of weeks of September reading. I will begin posting questions to discuss on the group’s web bulletin board space on September 16 and will add a new question each day until September 26 (our regular meeting day).  I encourage members to log on each day to answer the day’s question as well as review, and respond to, the answers other members provided for the previous day’s questions.  We will then meet via video-conference on September 26 at 3:00.

If you’re not already a member of our web bulletin board space email me at ayosco@lapl.org. I will send you the details you need to know to sign yourself up.

Make a note: if you plan to join the video-conference you’ll need to send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so I can get the conference link to you.

Trivia of the Week (Answer)….

This time we asked what is quantum computing? Not a simple question to answer but let’s provide a basic approach and say: “Quantum computing is the use of quantum physics in the processing of information… quantum computers encode information according to quantum mechanical states of the involved atomic constituents… All these possibilities could be addressed at the same time--a phenomenon called superposition--something a binary system cannot do.”

For more specifics about this fascinating topic check out the overview the above is culled from. Citation: "Quantum computing." World of Computer Science, Gale, 2002. Gale In Context: Science, https://link-gale-com.ezproxy.lapl.org/apps/doc/CV2424500492/SCIC?u=lapl&sid=SCIC&xid=ccb4e5dd. Accessed 7 July 2020.

The question and answer came from the Gale in Context: Science database.  This database provides Information on subjects ranging from earth science and life science, to space, technology, mathematics, science history, and biography for assignments and projects. Find it listed alphabetically under G on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) and access it with your library card.

What If It’s Us

Book Jacket for: What if it's us
What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera is a sweet, YA (aimed at teenagers) romance.  Arthur Seuss is in New York City for the summer with his parents working for his mother’s law firm.  On a coffee run he sees Ben Alejo and follows him into the post office.  Ben is in the post office attempting to return a box filled with his ex’s possessions.  They meet and exchange just enough information to allow cyberstalking to pinpoint identity at which point a number of first dates are attempted.  Arthur & Ben’s parents and friends add their own threads to the plot creating an enjoyable stew of young love.  This is not an ever after kind of story but it is a realistic, sweet take on youthful love that you don’t have to be a youth to enjoy.

Trivia of the Week (Answer)…

This time around we asked you to name a noted female mathematician born before the 1800’s?  Possible answers include:
  • Agnesi, Maria Gaetana
  • Germain, Sophie
  • Herschel, Caroline Lucretia
  • Hypatia of Alexandria
  • Lepaute, Nicole-Reine
  • Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Gabrielle-Emilie, Marquise du Chatelet
  • Piscopia, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro
  • Somerville, Mary Fairfax
  • Theano
The answer was found courtesy of a “person search” in the Gale in Context: Biography database.  This database covers the world's most influential people, merging reference content with periodicals and multimedia, allowing users to search for people based on name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, gender, keyword and full text.  Find it listed alphabetically under G on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) and access it with your library card.

Let’s Make Something

Have some fun decorating an empty glass jar… You will need:
  • Glass jar. Here you can use any you have around from the large pickle jar to the small jam jar.
  • Tissue paper in a variety of colors
  • Glue
  • Brush
The goal is to apply the tissue paper to the jar so start by thinking about your design. Do you want to create a scene? Do you want to make something completely abstract? Do you want to use regular shapes to make a pattern? Once you’ve decided what you want to do cut your tissue paper into the shapes you need to create that design.  Then mix some glue with water.  I find a ratio of about ½ glue to ½ water works fine.  With a brush coat the glass with the glue mixture. Apply a tissue paper shape and lightly coat over it with the glue mixture. Continue applying all the shapes you need to complete your design.  Allow the whole thing to dry.

Use your decorated jar anyway you wish. Perhaps you can put tea lights in for a decorative, glowing accent. Perhaps you can turn it into a pencil or pen holder. Maybe it can serve as a vase.

History of Highland Park

The 1981 article by Charles Cooper, “Fred Thompson earned millions as movie star; died at age 38” (http://dbase1.lapl.org/webpics/calindex/documents/10/520192.pdf) recalls the life of Highland Park raised Fred Thompson. Thompson who not only grew up in Highland Park but went to Occidental College apparently won national and international championships in the decathlon before becoming a Minister and serving in WWI. Marrying a divorced woman forced him from the church so he turned to acting becoming notable as an actor in silent, western films.  The article goes into more detail about this interesting man’s life. Although annoyingly incomplete, what is there is fascinating. Check it out.
