This month’s question is what was imagism? To quote directly from our source:
A school of poetry founded by Ezra Pound, derived from the ideas of the philosopher T.E. Hulme. The imagist poets were in revolt against excessive romanticism and proclaimed that poetry should use the language of common speech, create new rhythms, be uninhibited in choice of subject and present a precise image. Imagism was a key influence on modernism in English-language verse. The question, and answer, were taken from p. 346 of Brewer’s Dictionary of Modern Phrase & Fable. The book was compiled by Adrian Room and published by Cassell & Co in 2000.
