History of Highland Park
Today we have a digital copy of Garvanza prose and verse: Inez and Wanda; Annabelle Gray. This is a short story and poetry collection written by members of the Fortnightly Club in Garvanza at and following their meetings, which were often held at the Judson Studio. Each member wrote a portion of the work. This group started Garvanza Library. This was produced in 1906. Check it out.

Highland Park Walks
We have a pair of Highland Park Walk programs lined up for October.
The first we’re calling Highland Park Walks – Sedately. It will be a flat walk during which we will explore some of our local history. This walk takes place on Friday, October 14 at 9:30. We’ll meet up in the Library Lobby before setting out.
The second is for the more ambitious exerciser. We’re calling it Highland Park Walks – Vigorously. This will be a steep walk featuring hills, stairs, or possibly both. This walk takes place on Friday, October 21 at 9:30. We’ll meet up in the Library Lobby, pick the route we want to take, and set out.
You are more than welcome to join us for either walk (or both!) Dogs are welcome to come along, though they will have to wait outside for the walk to start.

Check out this short Sept. 12, 1974 article titled “Avenue 58 stairway to be reconstructed”. It tells of the process for and progress in getting a set of stairs installed to hook up dead end segments of Avenue 58. Pictured is the stairs that were scheduled to be replaced. Check it out.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….
This time the question is what is a word that was borrowed into the English language from Dharuk? There is more than one answer to this question. In fact, according to the source I used to find the answer, there are 19 answers. Among them: bettong, narang, and wombat.
Find the answer to the question with an advanced search in the Oxford English Dictionary. The online edition of that venerable work is available on the library’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card. You’ll find it under O.

Arroyo Book Club October Pick…
October is a non-fiction book month for the Arroyo Book Club so the non-fiction book we will be reading is Barbizon by Paulina Bren. The Barbizon was a New York City residential hotel for women. Bren tells the history of the hotel and the women, both famous and not, who stayed there. The book “offers readers a multilayered history of New York City in the 20th century, and of the generations of American women torn between their desire for independence and their looming social expiration date. By providing women a room of their own, the Barbizon was the hotel that set them free.”
As always, you will find copies of the book on the top of the bookcase by the circulation desk. You may also elect to check out the ebook version. Find the link to the ebook page here: https://lapl.overdrive.com/library/available/media/5588716.
We will be using group generated questions to discuss this book so keep a pen and paper handy as you read to note down interesting questions or points of discussion, then be ready to take your turn leading discussion when we meet up on October 22 at 3:00.
Our October 22 meeting will be a hybrid meeting so you may elect to attend either in person or via Zoom. If you wish to attend via Zoom please email ayosco@lapl.org so we can get you added to the link list.
