New Electronic Resource: MyHeritage

 

The Library now has MyHeritage available on its Research and Homework page.   MyHeritage Library Edition is one of the largest, most internationally diverse genealogy databases of its kind in the world. It includes billions of historical documents from over 48 countries, millions of historical photos, public records, indexes and additional resources. Whether genealogy is a hobby you have or you would just like to poke around in your family tree for a bit out of curiosity, give this tool a try.

You can access MyHeritage with your library card from the Library’s Research and Homework page. You will find it listed in the M’s.

Walk Highland Park

 

We will set out on foot to explore the Highland Park area on Friday, January 14 at 10:00 a.m. We will meet in the library lobby and decide upon a route that may involve, hills, stairs, or both.  People of all ages are invited so make it a family affair. Dogs are welcome to come too but they will need to wait outside for the walk to begin.

History of Highland Park…

 

The 1983 article “19th century glass photos restored; now on display” is talking about 35 glass photographs taken by local Charles Lummis. The photos were taken during his travels in Mexico and South America.  The article includes a bit of biographical information about Lummis as well as a bit of information about the photographs in question.  Six newspaper quality images of the photos are included. Check the article out.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

 

The question this time, what is an ATS (applicant tracking system)? The ATS is a software program used by mid- to large-size companies to both recruit and manage employees. The ATS narrows the search by scanning documents for specific keywords as determined by the hiring manager or recruiter. Resumes that make it through this machine screening are then reviewed by human readers. When writing a resume it is worthwhile to create a document that will appeal to both the software reader and the human reader. Check out this questions source for plenty of information about designing a resume.

The question, and answer, were found on Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center.  This is an electronic resource for lifelong career exploration and planning. It offers resources for career goals, education planning, workplace skills, finding apprenticeships and internships, conducting job searches, and much more. The resource can be found on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) under F and you can access it with your library card.

New Electronic Resource: Legal Information Reference Center

 

The library now has the Legal Information Reference Center available on its Research and Homework page.  The Legal Information Reference Center offers everyday users the tools and how-to instructions that will help them with a wide-range of legal issues. Many full-text legal reference books are accessible through the Reference Center, notably those provided through Nolo Press. Included is a Legal Forms by U.S. State feature, where users can search for state-specific legal forms by top subject areas including adoption, bankruptcy, name changes, and more.

Access the Legal Information Reference Center with your library card from the library’s Research and Homework page. You will find it listed in the L’s.

Highland Park History

 

The article “Clyde Browne and the Abbey San Encino” by Charles Cooper takes a close look at a local resident and his architectural obsession. You may have seen the Abbey… it’s directly across the street (and down the dell) from the library. You will learn that the Abbey includes a wedding chapel, a dungeon, and a bell tower that housed the bell that used to call Garvanza children to school. Take a look at the article for lots of fascinating detail.

The Well-Dressed Ape

 

Hannah Holmes turns on naturalist eye on herself in TheWell-Dressed Ape.  Chapter by chapter she looks at the human animal in the same way a discerning observer would examine a butterfly or an antelope.  In these various chapters she examines a human’s physical description, brain, perception, range, territoriality, diet, reproduction, behavior, communication, predators, and ecosystem impacts.  The book is interesting and easily accessible to the non-expert. I quibble a bit with the way she’ll go from her example, usually of herself under personal scrutiny, to a universal principal of behavior for all humans. However the book does remain charming and guides readers to a generally objective look at themselves and their species.
