See image. The question asked what the front page of the 7/13/1939 Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper looked like. This was really a what tool could you use question. And the answer there is the LAPL’s Los Angeles Sentinel Historical Archive.  This archive allows you to browse complete issues, cover to cover, from 1934 to 2005. Search by more than 20 article types, keyword, date ranges, specific dates, author, and more. View news articles, photos, advertisements, classified ads, obituaries, cartoons, and more for added context. Print and download articles and images in PDF format. A fascinating thing to explore and a way to get a look at what was going on in LA’s African-American community.

This week we asked you to identify the first line of the poem that includes a raven and the phrase “nevermore”.  The poem is, of course, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven and the first line is:

 

ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—

This was easy to find by using the LitFinder database.  This database provides access to thousands of full-text poems, stories, essays, plays and speeches.  Find it listed alphabetically under L on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) and access it with your library card.

Arroyo Book Club September Pick…

For our September pick we are constructing our own personalized anthology of essays.  The essays we will read for discussion are:

• On the Duty of Civil Disobedience by Thoreau (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/71). “It argues the superiority of the individual conscience over acquiescence to government.”
• Self-Reliance by Emerson (find it in this collection: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/16643).  “Persuasive and convincing, Emerson challenges readers to redefine their beliefs and sense of self.” 
• Common Sense by Paine (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/147). “Paine's daring prose paved the way for the Declaration of Independence…”

These are all titles that can be found on Project Gutenberg. You can also get in touch with me at ayosco@lapl.org for physical copies of books containing the essays, while supplies last.    

The plan is for everyone to obtain copies and spend the first couple of weeks of September reading. I will begin posting questions to discuss on the group’s web bulletin board space on September 16 and will add a new question each day until September 26 (our regular meeting day).  I encourage members to log on each day to answer the day’s question as well as review, and respond to, the answers other members provided for the previous day’s questions.  We will then meet via video-conference on September 26 at 3:00.

History of Highland Park…

Last week we referenced Judson Stained Glass Studio. This week let’s take a look at the man behind the studio (originally) with this article, Over the Week-end, (http://dbase1.lapl.org/webpics/calindex/documents/10/520143.pdf) by Arthur R. Ford which takes an in-depth look at the life of William L. Judson. The article was published in March of 1944.  Take a look.

Short Story Contest

 

Do you fancy yourself a writer? Have a short story in your back pocket or feel like writing one right now?  Why not submit your work to LAPL’s own short story contest.  We are currently accepting stories of 8,000 words or less.  Winner’s work will be included on LAPL’s short story portal and available for printing via Central Library’s Short Story Dispenser.

Submissions are being accepted until August 31. Authors may submit more than one story but must by 18 years of age or older.  Find all the details and links for participation here: https://lapl.org/short-stories

Trivia of the Week (Answer)….

This time we asked what is quantum computing? Not a simple question to answer but let’s provide a basic approach and say: “Quantum computing is the use of quantum physics in the processing of information… quantum computers encode information according to quantum mechanical states of the involved atomic constituents… All these possibilities could be addressed at the same time--a phenomenon called superposition--something a binary system cannot do.”
