The Arroyo Book Club February Pick

February is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club. The book we will be reading is One Summer by Bill Bryson.  Bryson is an author I’ve long admired for his travel writing but this is no travel book. In this book Bryson captures 1927’s “outsized personalities, exciting events, and occasional just plain weirdness with his trademark vividness, eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. In that year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative nonfiction of the highest order.”

As always I’ll have copies available for you to check out on the window shelf by the Circulation Desk (or just ask one of our employees). There are a few e-copies available. Find them on Overdrive here.

We will meet to discuss the book on February 25 at 3:00. This will be a hybrid meeting so you are welcome to join us in person or via Zoom.  If you’d like to join us via Zoom send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can get you the link.

The Do It Yourself Memory Lab

Good news! Central Library’s Do It Yourself Memory Lab is back in operation.  What’s a do it yourself memory lab I hear you ask.  It’s a service that allows you to do your own personal archiving and digitizing: converting VHS tapes and Super 8 to digital, scanning photos and negatives, and much more.

  • Things to know before making a reservation to use the Memory Lab:
  • The Memory Lab is located inside the Octavia Lab (https://www.lapl.org/labs) the Central Library's makerspace on LL2 across from the Science, Technology and Patents Department.
  • Reservations are only taken by phone, 213-228-7150 or in-person.

In order to make a reservation, an orientation is required. If you took the in-person Memory Lab orientation pre-pandemic, you’re good to go. If you’re new to DIYML you will need to complete the new virtual orientation accessible on Niche Academy (https://my.nicheacademy.com/labs), and receive a passing score on the quiz (71% or above). Create a free email login and password on Niche Academy before beginning the orientation to receive full credit.

Note that the Octavia Lab hours are:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Friday & Saturday: 1 - 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday & Thursday: 3:30 - 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday and city holidays: Closed
Email memorylab@lapl.org for any questions and or check out lapl.org/memorylab for other resources.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time we asked what is Abhinaya? It is an Indian term for acting. To quote extensively from the source, it is “acting, or the medium of ‘carrying’ the meaning of a dramatic text to the spectator. It covers all histrionic activity: the physical, verbal, mental, and decorative.” To continue “Traditionally, Indian theatre classifies abhinaya as fourfold: angika (physical), vacika (verbal), sattvika (internal or emotional/ mental), and aharya (external or ‘added’, of costumes, props, make-up, as well as decor).”

The source provides much more fascinating information about the art of Indian acting. Check it out:

(2004). Abhinaya. In Lal, A. (Ed.), The Oxford Companion to Indian Theatre. : Oxford University Press. Retrieved 3 Aug. 2022, from https://www.oxfordreference.com/view/10.1093/acref/9780195644463.001.0001/acref-9780195644463-e-0002.

The question, and answer, were found in “The Oxford Companion to Indian Theatre” which can be found within Oxford Reference Online.  This database provides quick reference and scholarly articles from a broad range of subjects in over 100 titles that include key titles from the Oxford Companion series and the complete Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.  Find it on the library’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card. You’ll find it under O.

The Girl at the Baggage Claim

Gish Jen attempts to explain the East-West culture gap in The Girl at the Baggage Claim.  Her explanation resolves to a different concept of self backed up and reinforced by the social systems their possessors are raised with.  She calls the western self a “big pit” self, the reference here is an avocado with the I being a big distinct thing that is different for everyone.  So your big pit of self is distinct and individual, craves recognition, and tends to examine things by breaking them into small pieces and seeing how those pieces work.  She calls the eastern self a “flexi-self.”  The flexi-self has more porous boundaries with other individuals, prizes the whole over the individual, looks at the whole picture and is more apt to find patterns and appreciate the impact of context.  Jen looks at these two conceptions of self and how they interact with the world and with each other, finishing with a look at bicultural individuals who have both influences.

The book was an interesting read. It proposed a framework for understanding two different cultural conceptions of self.  As with all things that attempt to universally address aspects of human behavior it doesn’t really succeed in making its case.  It remains, however, an interesting take that I would recommend

History of Highland Park (& environs)

Today let’s take a look at the Highland Park adjacent development of Monterey Hills. Here we have a “Fact Sheet” for the project from the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency. The undated document (though the text indicates a composition date of late 1970) includes a map and basic facts about the project.

Invisible Women

In Invisible Women Caroline Criado Perez investigates how the questions we ask and the data we collect can leave us with giant blind spots and provide us with faulty solutions.  As you would suspect from the title, the data gap she is most focused on is the one that sets male as default human and ignores female.  She takes a look at what data we collect and how that colors the results and impacts the lives of women and girls in daily life, the workplace, design, going to the doctor, public life, and when disasters strike. While doing this she makes a very convincing case about the existence of this data gap and the pervasively negative impact of it.  All of this is made even more disheartening as it looks like we as a society are beginning to place our judgment calls in the hands of seemingly impartial pseudo AIs.  Which means these programs will make their decisions based on the incomplete data we give them and all the needs of the unconsidered will fall through the cracks.

This book was an easy, interesting read though it definitely leaves you feeling discouraged by what it has to say. I would recommend it to anyone and would hope that all those who read it come away with their blinders off.
