Telescope Night…

The ever-popular Telescope Night returns (weather permitting) to the Arroyo Seco Library on Monday, November 7.  We will begin at 6:00 and wrap things up shortly before the library closes at 8:00.  Mark your calendar and plan to drop by.  Do note that the event is weather dependent, so if there are clouds on the day give us a call after 3:00 for word on the status of the program.

For those who don’t know what Telescope Night is…  During Telescope Night a group of local astronomers, the Sidewalk Astronomers, sets up telescopes outside the library and points them at objects of interest in the night sky.  Everyone is invited to take as many turns as they’d like looking through the telescopes.  The Sidewalk Astronomers are very knowledgeable and will answer your questions & chat about how they made the telescopes.  Bring your questions with you.

History of Highland Park

Wilfrid Dellequest’s 7/14/1957 article “The old gray rock watches over the green-clad valley,” tells the story of that local landmark, Eagle Rock. Included in the file is a second article, this one by Virginia Kay. Titled “History and Mystery of Bird Rock Reveal Tales of Red men, Early Settlers and Bandits.” This seems to be a somewhat fictitious recount of legends the previous article says did not exist.  Fascinating.

Game Day

 (of the non-electronic variety)

If you’re in the mood for some good old fashioned scrabble make plans to join us on Sunday, October 30 at 3:00.  We welcome all comers --- even complete novices.

This will be friendly, though there will (of course) be one winner.  Will that be you?  See you there.

…by the way if you have a scrabble game board bring it along…

Arroyo Book Club November Pick

November is Native American Heritage Month and the Arroyo Book Club is celebrating with a book from (and about) a Native American.  Our pick is Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko.  The book is described:

Tayo, a World War II veteran of mixed ancestry, returns to the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. He is deeply scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese and further wounded by the rejection he encounters from his people. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power.

There will be plenty of copies at the branch on the shelf under the window where we always put the book club books, so swing by and pick up a copy for yourself.  The ebook copies are all checked out right now but if you’re interested in the e-audiobook you’re in luck.  There’re lots of copies, find them here.

We will meet to discuss the book on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, specifically on November 26 at 3:00. Once again this will be a hybrid meeting so you may come join us in person or join us virtually via Zoom.  If you’re interested in the Zoom link be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org.

Finally, if you’ve books you’d like to see the Arroyo Book Club read fill out this short online form: https://bit.ly/3Ta16IQ

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time the question was what is Abbaye de Tamié? It is a cheese. Specifically, “a washed-rind cheese produced from raw cow’s milk by the monks at Abbaye Notre-Dame de Tamié in the Savoie department, France. The cheese has a thin disk shape and comes in two sizes, Grand Modèle (4 pounds [1.6 kilograms]) and Petit Modèle (21 ounces [600 grams]). About 882 pounds (400 kilograms) of the cheese is produced daily from the milk collected from eight surrounding farms.”

The question, and answer, were found in “The Oxford Companion to Cheese” which can be found within the Oxford Reference Online.  This database provides quick reference and scholarly articles from a broad range of subjects in over 100 titles that include key titles from the Oxford Companion series and the complete Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.  Find it on the library’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card. You’ll find it under O.

Bad Day at the Vulture Club

Vaseem Khan continues his Baby Ganesh Agency series with Bad Day at the Vulture Club.  In this volume Chopra and his elephant sidekick Ganesh investigate the death of Cyrus Zorabian a prominent Parsee businessman.  Parsees believe that after death their bodies should be left to the elements to be scavenged back to bone by birds.  Zorabian was found in the Tower of Silence, Parsee holy ground.  Chopra soon finds links between this death and crimes tied into an assortment of property scams.

This interestingly plotted book is full of fun details about life in Mumbai.  It can be read alone though I would recommend the whole series for those with a taste for murder mysteries set in far off places.

Highland Park Walks

We have a pair of Highland Park Walk programs lined up for October.

The first we’re calling Highland Park Walks – Sedately. It will be a flat walk during which we will explore some of our local history.  This walk takes place on Friday, October 14 at 9:30.  We’ll meet up in the Library Lobby before setting out.

The second is for the more ambitious exerciser.  We’re calling it Highland Park Walks – Vigorously. This will be a steep walk featuring hills, stairs, or possibly both. This walk takes place on Friday, October 21 at 9:30. We’ll meet up in the Library Lobby, pick the route we want to take, and set out.

You are more than welcome to join us for either walk (or both!) Dogs are welcome to come along, though they will have to wait outside for the walk to start.
