Trivia of the Month (Answer)...

This month’s question is what was imagism?  To quote directly from our source:
A school of poetry founded by Ezra Pound, derived from the ideas of the philosopher T.E. Hulme.  The imagist poets were in revolt against excessive romanticism and proclaimed that poetry should use the language of common speech, create new rhythms, be uninhibited in choice of subject and present a precise image. Imagism was a key influence on modernism in English-language verse.
The question, and answer, were taken from p. 346 of Brewer’s Dictionary of Modern Phrase & Fable. The book was compiled by Adrian Room and published by Cassell & Co in 2000.

Arroyo Book Club’s September Pick…

The Arroyo Book Club will be visiting the Victorian era in England with our September book, Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell.  Gaskell depicts the lives of middle to lower class women in a small village and uses humor to limn her stories.  Amazon describes the book with:
Cranford is a witty portrait of small town life in early-Victorian England. The story unfolds through the eyes of Mary Smith, a young woman who observes the comedic struggles of two middle aged sisters in their efforts to maintain a level of refined dignity amid poverty.
This book is available from Project Gutenberg so you may download a copy for yourself from their website (you’ll find this title here: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/394) or you can stop by the library for a paper copy.  Then make plans to join us for a discussion of the novel on September 28 at 3:00.

Time Was

Time Was by Ian McDonald is a slender lyrical story about two WWII soldiers who wide up crisscrossing the 20th century, seemingly seeing only the most violent parts, after an experiment goes awry.  The story is told by Emmett Leigh a seller of old books and begins when he finds a letter hidden in the pages of a book of poetry.  This puts him on the track of Ben and Tom, our time drifting soldiers.

The book was not quite what I was expecting.  I thought the story would be more about the two who were lost in time but it wound up being more about the narrator.  Nevertheless I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
