Trivia of the Month (Answer)...

Book Jacket for: The complete gods and goddesses of ancient EgyptThis month’s question sought your knowledge of Sah.  Sah was an Egyptian god.  He personified the constellation of Orion.  Sah is mentioned quite frequently in the Pyramid Texts where he is called the “father of the gods”.  He is sometimes depicted in temples and tombs as a god surrounded by stars who sails across the sky in a papyrus skiff.

The question (and answer) were taken from p. 127 of The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt by Richard H. Wilkinson. The book was published in 2003 by Thames & Hudson.

Arroyo Book Club April Pick

In April we will be exploring the Pacific Ocean with Simon Winchester and his book Pacific: Silicon Chips and Surfboards, Coral Reefs and Atom Bombs, Brutal Dictators and Fading Empires.  Winchester is noted for interestingly written, non-fiction, topical explorations and he brings all those chops to this look at the past (& future) of the Pacific.  The book jacket tells us that…
Winchester recounts the atomic tests on the atoll of Bikini. He takes us to the launch of “Gidget” and her surfboards that would forever change how the world’s youth views a rising wave. He also tells the story of the little transistor radio and how it sparked the digital revolution, from Japan to Silicon Valley, altering the ocean’s destiny. Winchester includes tales of alarming discoveries on the Great Barrier Reef and grand expeditions to mysterious vents on the ocean’s floor. He examines the geopolitical shifts that shaped the ocean’s vast land areas, from the rise of North Korea’s rogue state to the environmental degradation and climate shifts that now threaten this majestic body of water.
Clearly an eclectic, wide ranging look at the topic.  Stop by the branch for a copy to read.  Read it making note of interesting questions you can bring for discussion.  Join us for that discussion on April 27 at 3:00.

CitSciDay (April 13)

April 13 is CitSciDay, or Citizen Science Day, and the library is participating.  To quote from citizenscience.org: “Citizen Science Day is an annual event to celebrate and promote all things citizen science: amazing discoveries, incredible volunteers, hardworking practitioners, inspiring projects, and anything else citizen science-related!”

The Arroyo Seco Branch will be taking part in a Stall Catchers Megathon on that day from 11:00 to 12:00.  The goal of the Megathon is to get as many people as possible to play an online game to help answer a key Alzheimer's research question. Stall Catchers, the online game in question, helps scientists by harnessing the game player to the task of data analysis. If 100,000 people across the United States participate in the Megathon they will complete a year’s worth of analysis.  You can find more information at megathon.us.

Sign up to play at lapl.stallcatchers.com.

So… help make it all happen and join us on April 13 between 11 and 12 to play.

History of Highland Park…

Today I bring you the souvenir paper produced by Highland Park News Herald & Journal for Highland Park’s Diamond Jubilee in 1963 (http://dbase1.lapl.org/webpics/calindex/documents/11/520698.pdf).  The paper calls itself a “Pictorial and Feature Panorama of the Historical Development of Highland Park… including sketches of the individuals and firms whose faith and plans have made its forward progress possible.”

All in all this is an 88-page extravaganza of information about the Highland Park of the past.  It includes such interesting things as a chart of rainfall by month for the entire 75 years prior to 1963, pictures of all 3 (to that time) Monte Vista Street schools, the first Highland Park subdivision map, lots of celebratory advertising from local businesses and organizations, and more.  Definitely worth browsing through.

Trivia of the Month...

To get very trivial… this month’s question is what do you know of Sah?

I, Mammal

Book Jacket for: I, mammal : the story of what makes us mammalsIn his book I, Mammal, Liam Drew explores the origins and uses of those traits used to classify animals as mammals.  While this description sounds rather dry and prosaic the book itself is a fascinating read, full of interesting facts.  For instance, did you know that of the 5,080 species of placental mammals 1,116 are bats of one type or another while 2,277 are rodents of some kind.  I’m not sure why I find that fact so fascinating, perhaps because I never realized just how many different kinds of bats there are.

In any event, this is not a book seeking to expound new science but rather a book that seeks to educate its reader about its topic.  It does its educating by keeping the reader interested and engaged.  I would strongly recommend it.
