Game Day
(of the non-electronic variety)
If you’re in the mood for some good old fashioned scrabble make plans to join us on Sunday, August 13 at 3:00. We welcome all comers --- even complete novices.
This will be friendly, though there will (of course) be one winner. Will that be you? See you there.

Area History
Check out this 24 January 1971 article by Roger Swanson in the Eagle Rock Sentinel titled "Freeway completion nears" for details about the building of the 134 freeway through Eagle Rock. It was apparently an expensive undertaking, particularly the bit running across the Arroyo.

Arroyo Book Club’s August Pick
August is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Seco Book Club and the non-fiction book we will be reading is The girl with Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee. This is a memoir written by a North Korean woman who escaped that country. The book’s description tells us that it is… “An extraordinary insight into the life under one of the world's most ruthless and secretive dictatorships - and the story of one woman's terrifying struggle to escape.”
We will have copies of the book available at the branch in the place where such books are usually put, just ask a staff member if you can't find them. If you’re interested in an ebook version you can find it on Hoopla here.
We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, August 26 at 3:00. This meeting will be held both in person and via Zoom, so, if you're interested in attending virtually be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

History of Highland Park
Check out the article “Highland Park Ebell with Build this Beautiful Home” in the 20 July 1912 edition of the Highland Park News-Herald & Journal. The picture is obviously of the building that was built and can be found on Ave 57 just below Figueroa. The article estimates the building would take between $10,000 and $12,000 to build. Reality indicates they found the money.
If you’re looking for old editions of local newspapers, including our own Highland Park News-Herald & Journal or Highland Park Post-Dispatch, you should check out the California Digital Newspaper Collection housed at the University of California at Riverside and available online at https://cdnc.ucr.edu/
