LA Made Presents: ZOS!MO Live

 


Enjoy a live performance of original Tagalog indie pop rock courtesy of ZOS!MO

ZOS!MO is the singer-songwriter moniker of Los Angeles-based Filipino American artist Zosimo Quibilan Jr. He will perform original Tagalog indie pop rock including excerpts from his rock opera about the 1896 Philippine Revolution vs. Spain.

Saturday, December 9 at 3 p.m.

ZOS!MO will perform a selection of original Tagalog indie pop rock songs from his album, Hahanapin Ang Tanong (Looking For Questions) and his rock opera, 2BAYANI, about Andres Bonifacio who led the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spain. English lyrics will be provided and everyone is welcome.

Arroyo Book Club December Pick

 



The Arroyo Book Club has made a habit of reading a Shakespeare play each December for a number of years now. With this in mind, December's book is Macbeth by William Shakespeare

“As it begins so will it end. Behind every successful man is an ambitious woman, and behind the Scottish Thane of Cawdor is his wife, Lady Macbeth. Together they will plot the death of a king, and all else who stand in their path towards absolute power.

But guilt-stoked madness and paranormal visitation lie ahead, and the man who kills in the night will come to understand that what begins in blood will end in blood.”

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is).

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

 


This month’s question asked what the portion of Figueroa that comes north out of the York / Figueroa intersection used to be called. It was Latrobe Street according to a 1905 insurance map of Los Angeles (small clip of relevant map included). You’ll note you can see the plot of land where the library will eventually be built (10 years on) in this clip.

The map was found in FIMo (Fire Insurance Maps from Historical Information Gatherers).  FIMo Historical Information Gatherers own the world's largest online digital collection of color fire insurance maps, real estate atlases and similar land use maps for North America.  FIMo includes map research tools and search tips to assist users in finding maps for a specific location. Find FIMo on the library’s Research & Homework page under “F” and access it with your library card.

The House in the Cerulean Sea


Meet Linus Baker. He works for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth as a caseworker. He knows the rules and regulations, knows that they are drawn up with the best interest of the children, and is dedicated to doing his best for the children.  He is sent to investigate an orphanage on a distant island by Extremely Upper Management. There he meets 6 very special children and the adults who care for them. Will Linus learn that the best help lies past the rules and regulations?  Find out in The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune.

The book is peopled by truly interesting characters and set in some sort of weird quasi big brother state, perfect for those who enjoy fantasy, dystopia light, and struggles for the triumph of our better selves.
