LAPL’s Digital Collection: Fruit Crate

This time around we’ll turn our attention back to the fruit crate collection. Here we have the label for the Fillmore Citrus Ass’n. This label has a bit of a personal connection for me since my father’s family were fruit growers in Fillmore, indeed I still have relatives growing citrus there.

Arroyo Book Club July Pick

July is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club. It is also month two of the library’s Summer Reading Challenge. The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is LA Dreaming. In celebration of that theme the book club will read titles set in or about Los Angeles. So… the book we will read and discuss this month is City of Dreams by Jerald Podair. The catalog description of the book says:

When Walter O'Malley moved his Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1957 with plans to construct a new ballpark next to downtown, he ignited a bitter argument over the future of a rapidly changing city. For the first time, City of Dreams tells the full story of the controversial building of Dodger Stadium-and how it helped create modern Los Angeles

Stop by the branch to pick up a copy to read. You will find them in the usual location, just ask if you don’t know where that is.  If you prefer e-reading the book is available via Hoopla here

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, July 27 at 3 p.m. It will be a hybrid meeting so you have the option of attending in person or via Zoom. If you’d like to join us via Zoom let us know at ayosco@lapl.org so we can get the link to you.

Chamber Hop from Echo Park: The Brendan Eder Ensemble

Saturday, June 29 at 3 p.m.

Join us for a musical experience!

LA native composer and producer Brendan Eder creates a kaleidoscopic musical blend of classical, experimental rock, jazz, electronic, and hip hop. Eder's whimsical, funky, and accessible compositions have the ability to engage anyone's imagination. The music sounds like Burt Bacharach, Miles, James Brown, Martin Denny, and Debussy blended into fresh compositions for winds, electric bass, and drum set.

Everyone is welcome

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month we asked what is the most common element on Earth. The answer is oxygen followed by silicon.

The question, and answer, were found in AccessScience. This is the online version of the standard encyclopedia with updated science and technology news, biographies, learning resources, study guides, and links to related web sites. The particular articles referenced were:

Garrett, Alfred B. “Chemical element.” AccessScience, McGraw Hill, Jan. 2020.

Faure, G., and J. D. MacDougall. “Geochemical distribution of elements.” AccessScience, McGraw Hill, Nov. 2019.

Find AccessScience on the library’s Research & Homework page under “A” and access it with your library card.

LAPL’s Digital Collection: Autographs

“There are few intelligent people who have not some interest in distinguished autographs.”

And thus Charles Lummis—traveler, historian, photographer, ethnographer, crusader for civil rights of Native Americans, editor, flamboyant personality and City Librarian from 1905-1910—institutionalized the novelty of autograph collecting, both as interesting artifact and historical record. Lummis had staff mail a blank page with “Los Angeles Public Library Autographs” imprinted at the top and asked notables of the day to “improve the page.” Under Lummis’ tenure nearly 750 autographs were collected. They contain original watercolors, sketches, written music, poems and moving sentiments.

Today we’ll look at the autograph of theologian, editor, author Lyman Abbott. Find the full image here

The Summer Reading Challenge

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge starts today, June 10, and runs through August 10 with the them L.A. Dreaming. It is for all ages so get everyone in the family enrolled.

The program works much as the one last summer did.  You may sign yourself up via Beanstack or stop by the library and have us sign you up. Upon enrolling you receive a lovely canvas tote featuring this year’s art work (while supplies last). Challenge finishers will earn a book and depending on their age a sticker page or a journal as well as tickets in the grand prize drawings.  The grand prize is your choice of gift card, year long museum membership, or an Apple i-pad.

Accompanying the challenge are a variety of library programs across all ages. Check out the library’s online calendar for details or keep an eye on our social media outlets.

Last year the Arroyo Seco Branch did very well in terms of overall enrollment. Let’s see if we can repeat that success and add in more completions too!
