Area History

Check out this 24 January 1971 article by Roger Swanson in the Eagle Rock Sentinel titled "Freeway completion nears" for details about the building of the 134 freeway through Eagle Rock. It was apparently an expensive undertaking, particularly the bit running across the Arroyo.

Arroyo Book Club’s August Pick

August is a non-fiction month for the Arroyo Seco Book Club and the non-fiction book we will be reading is The girl with Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee. This is a memoir written by a North Korean woman who escaped that country. The book’s description tells us that it is… “An extraordinary insight into the life under one of the world's most ruthless and secretive dictatorships - and the story of one woman's terrifying struggle to escape.”

We will have copies of the book available at the branch in the place where such books are usually put, just ask a staff member if you can't find them. If you’re interested in an ebook version you can find it on Hoopla here.

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, August 26 at 3:00. This meeting will be held both in person and via Zoom, so, if you're interested in attending virtually be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

History of Highland Park

Check out the article “Highland Park Ebell with Build this Beautiful Home” in the 20 July 1912 edition of the Highland Park News-Herald & Journal. The picture is obviously of the building that was built and can be found on Ave 57 just below Figueroa. The article estimates the building would take between $10,000 and $12,000 to build. Reality indicates they found the money.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month we turned to the world of Mathematics and asked for the truth table for A ¬B.  It is:

A

A ¬B

The idea for the challenge was taken from an article on Boolean Algebra found in the AccessScience Database. This database can be found on the library’s Research & Homework page under “A” and accessed with your library card.  Note the picture is of George Boole who first laid out the principles of Boolean Algebra around 1850. Boolean Algebra is integral to the way computers work.

History of Highland Park

Paging virtually through the 19 May 1922 edition of the Highland Park News-Herald & Journal my eye fell upon an ad for a movie showing at the local Sunbeam Theatre (where Sunbeam Vintage the furniture store is now). The movie in question was called The Silent Call and appears to a be a melodrama involving a “wolf-dog.” Tickets are 33 cents for adults. Check out the paper for more news of “that” day.

False Value

Ben Aaronovitch continues his Rivers of London series with the very engaging False Value. In this volume Peter Gant has gone undercover to pry into the workings of a tech behemoth. He runs into suspicious American librarians and suspected AI. Meanwhile on the home front Beverly is expecting twins while simultaneously prying around as only a river god can.

While the book can be enjoyed if you haven’t read the series as a whole, the series as a whole is so good I say read the other titles too.

History of Highland Park

Take a look through the 5 January 1969 edition of the Highland Park News-Herald & Journal for shots of floats from that year’s Rose Parade by local designers. Included are tidbits of information about those designers.
