July Arroyo Book Club Book

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge theme is “My LA.” In line with that the book club decided it would be fun to read a book that centered Los Angeles in some way for our June & July meetings. The book L.A. Weather by María Amparo Escandón was the run-away winner of our selection poll so it will be our July book.

The book is described:

"L.A. is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain. He's harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else. His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage. Their three daughters are blindsided and left questioning everything they know. Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way."

Find the catalog entry here

We will have copies of the book available at the branch in the place where such books are usually put, just ask a staff member if you can't find them. There are plenty of ebook copies available in Libby. Find a link here or just search in Libby.

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, July 22 at 3:00. If you're interested in attending via Zoom be sure to email us at ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month’s question asked you to describe the flag of Mozambique.

The flag of Mozambique is pictured. It consists of (from the bottom up) a yellow stripe, a thinner bordering white stripe, a black stripe, a thinner bordering white stripe, and a green stripe. A fed triangle extends from the left side of the flag 1/3 of the way in. In the center of the red triangle is a yellow star inside the star is the image of a Kalashnikov rifle with a bayonet attached to the barrel crossed by a hoe, superimposed on an open book.

The image was found in the database A to Z Maps Online which, while featuring maps, includes a section on flags of the world. This database can be found on the library’s Research & Homework page under “A” and accessed with your library card.
