The Arroyo Book Club’s February Pick

The Arroyo Book Club will be reading The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel for our February meeting.  This is a story of science, Astronomy to be specific, as well as a story of women and the work they do.  To quote from the book’s description…

Elegantly written and enriched by excerpts from letters, diaries, and memoirs, The Glass Universe is the hidden history of a group of remarkable women whose vital contributions to the burgeoning field of astronomy forever changed our understanding of the stars and our place in the universe

I have ordered plenty of copies so swing by the library any time to pick one up.  If you prefer ebook format, there are 7 copies available via Overdrive for you to check out.

February’s meeting will take place via Zoom on 2/26 at 3:00.  Be sure to send me an email at ayosco@lapl.org if you plan to attend so I can add you to the link list.

History of Highland Park….

This 2/7/1981 article, Historic Miller’s Hall…Was Victim of Progress by Roger Swanson, gives us a look at a building that had been torn down some 20 years before the article was written.  In the article, Swanson gives us a look at the rich history of Miller’s Hall and laments its demise at the hands of those who think newer is better.  The article includes a photograph of the building which was located on York Boulevard near Avenue 63.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time the question was what does an actuary do? Relatedly, what is the median salary of an actuary?  Being an actuary is one of the professions you can take up with a degree in Mathematics.  To quote from our source, “Actuaries use statistical formulas and techniques to calculate the probability of events such as death, disability, sickness, unemployment, retirement, and property loss. Actuaries develop formulas to predict how much money an insurance company will pay in claims, which determines the overall cost of insuring a group, business, or individual.”  The median salary for actuaries is $102,880.

The question, and answer, were found on Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center.  This is an electronic resource for lifelong career exploration and planning. It offers resources for career goals, education planning, workplace skills, finding apprenticeships and internships, conducting job searches, and much more. The resource can be found on LAPL’s Research & Homework page under F and you can access it with your library card.

Because Internet

In Because Internet Gretchen McCulloch explores the rise of an informal written version of English.  She strikes a comparison between formal spoken English (TV presenters, people giving speeches) and informal spoken English (everyone talking to their friends and family) and sees the same distinction between the formal English you read in a book and the informal English you read (and write) when you text or tweet or engage online with others via text.  She then moves to examine in some detail this corpora of informal written English from her perspective as a linguist.

The book is interesting and quite accessible for the non-expert to understand.  While I generally find any book that explores language fascinating I didn’t get as into this one as I usually do. I would still recommend this book however as I think anyone who engages in the online world will find it an interesting exploration of our developing language.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

The question this time, what is an ATS (applicant tracking system)? The ATS is a software program used by mid- to large-size companies to both recruit and manage employees. The ATS narrows the search by scanning documents for specific keywords as determined by the hiring manager or recruiter. Resumes that make it through this machine screening are then reviewed by human readers. When writing a resume it is worthwhile to create a document that will appeal to both the software reader and the human reader. Check out this questions source for plenty of information about designing a resume.

The question, and answer, were found on Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center.  This is an electronic resource for lifelong career exploration and planning. It offers resources for career goals, education planning, workplace skills, finding apprenticeships and internships, conducting job searches, and much more. The resource can be found on LAPL’s Research & Homework page (https://lapl.org/collections-resources/research-and-homework) under F and you can access it with your library card.
