History of Highland Park…

Have you ever walked past Abbey San Encino? It’s that stone building located directly across the street (& down a steep hill) from the library. It was the personal project of one man, Clyde Browne.  Check out the article “Clyde Browne completes Abbey San Encino after nine years of labor” for all the details about its construction.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This time around our question asked us to name 2 (or more) industry’s that have a workforce comprised of less than 2% women.  See the screenshot for answers.

To answer the question I accessed the Census Bureau’s Economic Census page. Once there I downloaded the table of Median Earnings for 2018. I then copied relevant columns to a working spreadsheet and sorted to get my answer.

Lies Sleeping

Ben Aaronovitch continues one of my favorite series, Rivers of London, with Lies Sleeping.  This volume lives up to its predecessors providing an intricate, action filled plot peopled by the characters we’ve become familiar with.  Peter Grant and those working with him in the Metropolitan Police continue to fight against the faceless man who appears to be reaching the final stages of an unknown plan that would spell disaster for London.

I strongly recommend this series and encourage you to pick up the first volume, Midnight Riot, if you are unfamiliar with it.  If you already know the series you’ve probably already read Lies Sleeping and don’t need me to tell you to do so.

Bi-weekly Trivia Question (Answer)….

Our question asked what does a wind technician do. To quote directly from our source:

Wind energy industry workers perform a wide range of duties, from designing, building, repairing, and maintaining wind turbines and wind farms, to assessing and purchasing land for wind farms, protecting wildlife (especially birds) from the potentially harmful effects of wind turbines, and providing support services to scientific and technical workers

The question and answer were found in Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center. Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center is an electronic resource for lifelong career exploration and planning. It offers resources for career goals, education planning, workplace skills, finding apprenticeships and internships, conducting job searches, and much more. Find it listed alphabetically under F on LAPL’s Research & Homework page and access it with your library card

LA Made: Eskista

(Repost of a previous entry to remind you to sign up!)

The library’s LA Made is a cultural programming series featuring free music, dance, theater, and conversations with local entertainers at libraries throughout the city, or these days on library social and distance platforms.  This February they will be bringing a performance of Eskista to our branch via Zoom.

Join us for this exploration of Eskista – an Ethiopian cultural dance which is known for its unique emphasis on intense body movement – with Sinay Woubeshet & Fikru Weldekidan. Fikru and Sinay, originally from Ethiopia, share a mission to create and share culture throughout Los Angeles.

The program will take place on Saturday, February 13 at 3:00. Email ayosco@lapl.org for the program link.

Check out the library’s online event calendar for more LA Made programs at branches throughout the city.  Find the event calendar here: http://www.lapl.org/whats-on/calendar.  Selecting LA Made from the Program Series drop down box will limit your results to these programs.
