A chordophone is a term for musical instruments which produce sound by means of string stretched from one point to another. Simple chordophones are various types of zither; composites are lutes, lyres, rebecs, violins, guitars, harps, etc. One of 4 classifications of instruments devised by C. Sachs and E. M. von Hornbostel and published in Zeitschrift für Ethnologic, 1914. Other categories are membranophones, idiophones, and aerophones, with electrophones added later.The question & its answer came from p. 172 of The Oxford Dictionary of Music by Michael Kennedy.
