Trivia of the Month (Answer)...

This month’s question was easy if you remembered your high school algebra.  It was what does the equation of a parabola look like?  What, for that matter does a parabola look like?

The equation of a parabola takes the form
where (h, k) represents the vertex of the graphed equation and a impacts how "fat" or "skinny" the parabola is (or whether it opens up or down).

A parabola with the equation
 looks like:

Note in this case h and k are equal to 0 and a is equal to 1.

The question (& answer) were taken from p. 731 of the Discover Science Almanac.  The book was published by Hyperion in 2003.

The Arroyo Book Club’s January Pick…

The Arroyo Book Club will be taking a look at a classic in January, specifically,  A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.  The catalog provides the following as a summary for the edition we are reading:
After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille, the aging Doctor Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil roads of London, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine. This edition uses the text as it appeared in its first serial publication in 1859 to convey the full scope of Dickens's vision, and includes the original illustrations by H.K. Browne ('Phiz'). Richard Maxwell's introduction discusses the intricate interweaving of epic drama with personal tragedy.
Pick up a copy from the library, we are reading the Penguin version, and join us for discussion on January 27 at 3:00.

Best of 2017…

It’s that time of year again.  The time when everyone is busy putting together lists that in some respect summarize the year that is about to end.  The library is no exception and our annual best of 2017 lists area available for perusing.

You can find the best in…

I tend to look on these lists less as comprehensive “best” lists and more as - of all the books we read this past year, which was not every book published, these are the ones that stuck in our minds as interesting, good, well written, and worth sharing with all of our patrons.  So check out the lists for some ideas for things to read, to see if your own favorites are covered, and to see what should have been mentioned that was not.

Just One Damned Thing After Another

Book Jacket for: Just one damned thing after anotherIn Just One Damned Thing After Another Jodi Taylor tells the tale of St. Mary’s.  St. Mary is an academic institution whose mission is to “investigate major historical events in contemporary time.”  In other words its historians actually go back in time to witness the events they’ve been studying.  Sounds interesting enough but unfortunately the author couldn’t really decide what type of book she was writing so she’d start with one premise “history punishes those who change it --- quite violently” only to abandon it to move on to a “crazed ex-employee is seeking revenge and taking everyone down” plot but not without providing a paradox that her first pass at premise would have choked on.  She also makes similar 90 degree turns with characterization and style (notably moving abruptly from a “polite” sex happens off page book into a shockingly, raunchy let’s all read this explicit sex scene with no warning.)

All in all this is a book I wanted to like but in the end I couldn’t.  The author needed some help that her editor failed to give her.  If you’re seeking a good time travel book seek elsewhere.

Sixth Watch

Book Jacket for: Sixth watchSergei Lukyanenko concludes his long running Night Watch series with Sixth Watch .  The Night Watch series is a Russian take on a world that while the same as ours on the surface actually has an underground world of magicians and witches and vampires and just generally others.  This underworld is “watched” by the night watch (forces of ostensible good) and the day watch (forces of ostensible evil).  In this volume we meet all the characters we have met previously and watch all the storylines tie off in an interesting (and final) way.

While I definitely recommend this book quite highly, if you are new to Lukyanenko’s work you’ll want to start with the first volume of the series, Night Watch.

Music in December

We have a couple of music opportunities in December that I want to make sure you know about it.

First…. The UCLA Gluck Cello Quartet will be performing on December 10 at 3:30.  You can always expect an excellent show from Gluck musicians.

Second… Holiday Lights, a local chorus group, will be performing on December 17 at 3:30.  They invite a choral presentation of seasonal music.  Sing along to the songs you know, enjoy the songs you don't know.

So plan to join us for either performance.  Better yet, join us for both.  Everyone is welcome.

Trivia of the Month (answer)...

This month’s question put your Disney chops to the test… It was harken to the film Lady and the Tramp and list the names of the dogs in the pound.
Book Jacket for: Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's animated characters
The dogs in the pound scene included Toughy (an American mongrel), Boris (a Russian wolfhound), Pedro (a Mexican Chihuahua), Bull (an English bulldog), Dachsie (a dachshund), Peg (an old showgirl of a dog), and Nutsy (the unfortunately doomed dog).

The question (and answer) were taken from page 257 of The Encyclopedia of Walt Disney’s Animated Characters by John Grant.  The book was published by Hyperion in 1998.

The Arroyo Book Club’s December Pick…

For the second year, this is fast becoming a habit, the Arroyo Book Club has decided to read a work by Shakespeare for their December meeting.  This year we will be reading Richard III.  PBS’ In Search of Shakespeare program described Richard III with the following:

As one line ends, so another shall begin. In blood.
A crooked back. A twisted mind. / A warped
ambition. He can kill those who oppose him, but
he cannot kill their ghosts.
"Richard III": Portrait of a serial killer.

Pick up a copy from the library --- we’ve selected an edition that offers both the original text and the corresponding modern English translation --- and join us to discuss it on December 23 at 3:00.

The Big Sheep

Book Jacket for: The big sheepThe Big Sheep by Robert Kroese is a mystery story with a SF setting.  The setting is 2030’s Los Angeles.  A Los Angeles that has recovered from a massive period of economic unrest by creating “no-go zones” that are free from the burdens & protections of government.  Our narrator works for an eccentric private investigator or as he would prefer to be called a phenomenological inquisitor.  As the story opens they’ve been hired to find a stolen sheep.  This is, of course, no ordinary sheep.  Soon they have taken on a case investigating threats against a well-known young media star.  Surprisingly the cases seem to intersect.

The book has interesting characters and a reasonable amount of action.  It is, however, one of those books where the reader figures out what is going on quicker than the characters of the story.  As a reader you’re left to kind of shout at the characters about what they should be doing….

I would recommend this book to lovers of SF who don’t mind a Chandleresque mystery.

Craft Supply Exchange

Are you a crafty person, always looking for new things you can try your hand at? Do you have a plethora of half used materials from previous crafts you’ve tried that you’d like to get into the hands of someone else?  Join us for our inaugural Craft Supply Exchange program on December 2.  The program will run from 2:00-4:00.

Basically this program is exactly what the title says.  Bring in some of your unused craft materials and exchange them for someone else’s.  This can include the materials for paper crafting, sewing or quilting, embroidery, any of the arts, metalwork or jewelry making.  Really whatever your craft is.  We do ask that you only bring in materials that are in a usable condition.

Since this type of program can only get better with greater participation spread word of it widely among all the people you know who craft and prod them to come too.

The Arroyo Book Club’s November Pick

The Arroyo Book Club will be reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman for the November meeting.  Backman is an idiosyncratic writer with a talent for oddly compelling characters.  Let me share the catalog’s description with you…
In this bestselling and delightfully quirky debut novel from Sweden, a grumpy yet lovable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon--the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.
Stop by the library for a copy of the book and plan to join us for discussion on November 25 at 3:00.

The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra

Book Jacket for: The unexpected inheritance of inspector Chopra. The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra  is a charming mystery by Vaseem Khan.  In it we are introduced to Inspector Chopra on the day he both takes early retirement from the Mumbai police and inherits a baby elephant.  The body of a young man had been found on Chopra’s last day and he soon finds himself mired in trying to find out what happened to him.  The case takes on unexpected depths and the new elephant proves surprisingly helpful.

This was an enjoyable story that took an interesting look at Indian culture and the city of Mumbai and was peopled with fun characters.  I would recommend it and in fact have already requested the second book of the series for myself.

Stiletto

Book Jacket for: Stiletto : a novelStiletto by Daniel O’Malley is book 2 of a series that I’m finding absolutely enthralling.  The series which began with The Rook depicts the workings of a super-secret British government agency made up of individuals born with peculiar talents.  We’re talking really peculiar here, like for example, the ability to remotely control the anatomy of others or a set of quadruplets who share one mind.  The job of this agency is to protect ordinary Britain from the depredations of the supernatural.  Across the course of the two books we’ve watched the agency battle first an internal and then an external threat.

The characters are interesting, the situations are creative (& unusual) and the plot is compelling.  I highly recommend the series.

The Long Cosmos

Book Jacket for: The long cosmosTerry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter conclude their long Earth series with The Long Cosmos  (see 11/24/15 for entry about previous book in series).  In this tale a message of interstellar origin has been received all across the long Earth, a message that says simply join us.  How people react to the message and the consequences of their actions make up the book.

The book, while definitely not a stand alone, is an enjoyable read that I would recommend.  If you haven’t read the long Earth series pick up the first title, The Long Earth, and get started.

In Shining Armor

Book Jacket for: In shining armorElliott James continues his Pax Arcana series with In Shining Armor.  Here we have John Charming set into action by the kidnapping of his goddaughter.  This event sets off distrust between the werewolves and the knights.  We are soon involved in alternative dimensions and with a slew of evil monsters plotting all kinds of mayhem before things resolve.

All in all this is an adventurous book that revels in battle.  Probably best read as part of the series though I’ll admit the series is losing steam for me.  First books were better and this is only for the die hard who like to follow things to completion.

The Wizard of London

Book Jacket for: The wizard of LondonThe Wizard of London by Mercedes Lackey is book 4 of her Elemental Masters series.  I’ll note that I picked this book up without having read anything else in the series and enjoyed it just fine as a stand alone.  In this book we follow a pair of young girls at school in a slightly different version of Victorian England.  One girl grew up the daughter of missionaries in Africa and has been sent back to England for schooling.  The other girl is essentially a misplaced orphan who finds refuge in the school.  Both girls are talented in a psychic sense and the story focus on them, and the school staff, discovering and attempting to thwart what is essentially an evil magician.

The book was quite enjoyable though I found the reasons that turned the evil magician evil completely understandable in a way that made her defeat a bit sad even though she really did deserve to be defeated based on the actions her reasoning drove her to (that’s quite the sentence but I’ll let it stand).  The book is recommended for those who enjoy a light fantasy story.

The Arroyo Book Club’s October Pick….

Book Jacket for: Behind the beautiful forevers

The Arroyo Book Club will be reading Behind All the Beautiful Forevers by Katharine Boo for our October meeting.  As always I haven’t yet read this book so let me provide you with the catalog description:
In this brilliant, breathtaking book by Pulitzer Prize winner Katherine Boo, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human through the dramatic story of families striving toward a better life in Annawadi, a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport. As India starts to prosper, the residents of Annawadi are electric with hope. Abdul, an enterprising teenager, sees "a fortune beyond counting" in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Meanwhile Asha, a woman of formidable ambition, has identified a shadier route to the middle class. With a little luck, her beautiful daughter, Annawadi's "most-everything girl," might become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest children, like the young thief Kalu, feel themselves inching closer to their dreams. But then Abdul is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power, and economic envy turn brutal. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects people to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, based on years of uncompromising reporting, carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century's hidden worlds--and into the hearts of families impossible to forget.
Sounds like an interesting, personalized, exploration of a topic we don’t consider enough.  Stop by the library for a copy of the book and plan to join us on October 28 at 3:00 to discuss it.
