one block taken from the map around Spring & Main Street

Turning our attention to the map collection, we have Baist's real estate atlas of surveys of Los Angeles, California, 1921.  This particular map set “Covers the area of Los Angeles in a roughly 6-7 mile concentric circle centered on Broadway and First Street in downtown Los Angeles. Includes index to tracts additions and subdivisions, tract maps, and the San Fernando Valley. Complete in one volume, compiled and published from official records, private records, actual surveys"

The Arroyo Book Club’s February Pick

image of book cover

Our February read will be Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. To quote the book publisher: “A young woman from Nigeria leaves behind her home and her first love to start a new life in America, only to find her dreams are not all she expected”

Stop by the branch to pick up a copy to read, while they last. You will find them in the usual location, just ask if you don’t know where that is.  If you prefer an ebook, you’ll find copies of the title in Libby.

We will meet to discuss the book on Saturday, February 22 at 3 p.m. It will be a hybrid meeting so you have the option of attending in person or via Zoom. If you’d like to join us via Zoom let us know at ayosco@lapl.org so we can get the link to you.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month we asked what is a goiter. To quote from our source:

“A goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. When the gland enlarges, you may see or feel a swelling on your neck. A goiter can develop in someone with a normal thyroid, overactive thyroid, or underactive thyroid. The treatment will depend on the cause of the goiter.”

This information was found in Krames Online HealthSheets on the sheet titled “Common Thyroid Problems.”  Krames Online HealthSheets provide consumer-friendly health education materials written for patients on diagnosis, treatment options, surgeries and procedures, wellness and safety and on-going self-care strategies. Also available in Spanish.

This is a resource you can access with your library card from any branch computer.
