November Arroyo Book Club Pick….

November is a fiction month for the Arroyo Book Club and the book we will be reading is Warlight by Michael Ondaatje.

From the internationally acclaimed, Booker Prize-winning author of The English Patient, this is “an elegiac thriller [with] the immediate allure of a dark fairy tale*” set in the decade after World War II that tells the dramatic story of two teenagers and an eccentric group of characters. *The Washington Post

There will be copies of the book available at the library in the usual location (just ask staff if you don’t know where that is). If you prefer ebook format there are plenty of copies available in Libby/Overdrive here

We will meet to discuss the book on November 25 at 3:00. If you can’t join us in person but would like to follow along remotely please send an email to ayosco@lapl.org so we can add you to the link list.

History of Highland Park…

This one page brochure provides a quick thumbnail overview of the History of Northeast Los Angeles.  Here you’ll find a couple of paragraphs on early settlers and a brief list of places of note.  It appears to be some kind of advertising flyer.  Anyway, take a look.

The Only Plane in the Sky

The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff is a narrative of the events of 9/11 as told by all.  Garrett takes us minute by minute through the events of the day using the individual recollections of many different people.  Think of the work as a patchwork quilt. The quilt as a whole talks about the calamity of the day, while each patch represents a slice of one person’s experience of one moment in the day.  It provides an interesting perspective on a day that everyone who was old enough at the time can remember for themselves.  Of course it is mind-numbingly sad but it provides a nice look at an historical event. I would recommend it.

Monthly Trivia Question (Answer)….

This month’s question was when was the first gender reassignment surgery in the United States performed? It took place in February of 1965.  It took place at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine an organization which then went on to establish the first medical clinic to address gender identity and the medical concerns of transsexuals and those seeking gender reassignment.

The question and answer were found in a book on the Salem Press & Grey House Publishing Reference Shelf. The book was Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Events. Find the Salem Press Reference Shelf on the library’s Research & Homework page under “S” and access it with your library card.

Bears Behaving Badly

Bears Behaving Badly by MaryJanice Davidson is a romance novel set amid a society of were creatures.  Davidson’s world is basically our world with all the were creatures living hidden amongst us.  Our main characters are Annette Garsea and David Auberon, both a variety of werebear.  Annette works for what is effectively child protective services and David is a private investigator.  David is involved in an incident involving a juvenile werewolf and werefox which brings the whole thing under Annette’s purview.  Investigation reveals a deeper crime involving juveniles of many types and Annette and David undertake to get to the bottom of things.

The book is quite a fun read though it is not for someone who enjoys complicated plots.  The reader can easily figure out what’s going on chapters ahead of the investigating main characters.  However the characters are fun and the romance is not too steamy, it only gets physical at the very end.  I would recommend this to people who like a good fantasy story.

History of Highland Park…

Here is a copy of an article that tells of the library branch in the area that predates the one at our current location (6145 N. Figueroa).  This short little article tells the tale of the branch that was located on the corner of Ruby Street and Avenue 64 as well as its predecessor at the corner of Eagle Rock Avenue and Avenue 64.  It was published in 1904.

Eclipse Viewing Party

The Arroyo Seco Library will be hosting an Eclipse Viewing Party on Saturday, October 14th. It will begin at 8:15 and run until 10: 50. We will have eclipse viewing glasses to give out while supplies last. So, join your neighbors to experience a celestial phenomenon and see a partial solar eclipse for yourself.

All of this hinges on the weather, so fingers crossed the skies are clear.

Note: Save your eclipse glasses somewhere safe so you can use them again for next year’ s April 8th eclipse.
