Often the shapes are polygons and the pattern is in some sense repetitive. a tessellation is regular if it consists of congruent regular polygons...."So your floor tile is an example of a tessellation. There are artists who play with the idea and some of their works are quite cool. Check out M. C. Escher for a prime example of this.
